DEFINITION

The Newton is the unit of force, defined by newtons 2nd law of motion, as that which when applied to a body of mass 1 kg gives it an acceleration of 1 m s^-2. Thus the dimensions of the newton are [M]¹ [L]¹ [T]^-2 and the Newton is an equivelent of kg m s^-2

Notes:

• There are different types of mass, gravitational mass and inertial mass, these are not exactly the same.
• As mass is a scalar and acceleration a vector, force is also a vector.
