Milwaukee Railroad's 4-4-2 Hiawatha
The polychromatic Hiawatha Atlantics were built in 1935 for the Chicago, Milwaukee, St Paul and Pacific Railroad to run the 410 miles between Chicago and St Paul with six station stops in 390 minutes. They were so successful that they were replaced in 1938 by 4-6-4 Hudsons to deal with the increased loadings.
The train's most popular attraction was the Tip Top Tap Room – the first car behind the loco a cocktail bar without windows!
These were designed by Otto Kuhler, who also streamlined the Royal Blue for the Baltimore & Ohio in 1937, the Black Diamond for the Lehigh Valley Railroad in 1939 and the Tennessean for the Southern Railroad in 1941.
