Commercial Use of the FZ1
This page details where the Casio FZ1 has been used commercially. If you know of others please send me e-mail and will be glad to add and hopefully listen to it. And now in no particular order,...
Dennis
Dennis has been a FZ1 user since September 1987. He recorded a Billboard #1 song with his synth nicknamed Fuzzy. Dennis writes, "Remember the song 'More than words can say' by the group ALIAS ? Three ex-Heart founding members and two guys from Sheriff (When I'm With You ... another Billboard No.1 hit) I played keys on the record and my brother was a member of both bands. The Fz-1 was used for the background vocal sample "woah - oh" that occurs in the chorus. That's me singing the sample too".
Elton John
Corrando Fiore was kind enough to write, "I remember the keyboard player during Elton John's Reg Strikes Back Tour (around 1988) had a FZ-1 on stage. On the inlay card of the album, there's a 'Thanks to Casio UK'. Hope you find this information useful!". I sure do Corrando. Thanks for sending it in.
Erasure
Simon Tan remembers a Casio UK brochure when the FZ1 was new (1989), the brochure "freatured the pop group Erasure. There were a few pcitures of Vince Clarke (ex. Yazoo and Depeche Mode) with Andy Bell in the studio supposedly 'creating music' with the FZ-1. This brochure also detailed the VZ-1." Thanks for the great information Simon.
Salt-N-Peppa
Eagle eyed Lucas Marquardt dropped me the following, "I thought you would like to know that the keyboard player for Salt-N-Peppa used or uses the FZ-1, according to a few live-type videos on MTV".
Deee-Lite
DJ Sures writes, "2 years ago on Much Music I was watching the new years count down. And I noticed that in the video "Groove is in the Heart", they show their Casio FZ-1 keyboard often. It spins around and is featured lots. Check it out!"
To this I will suggest getting hold and reading the June 1991 issue of Keyboard. There is a long article, much of it discussing how the they used their FZ-1s and FZ-10m.Coldcut
Per Almered writes, "Coldcut used to have one, not sure if they still do though. It was the first sampler they bought, and the money, I believe, came from doing their 'Not Paid Enough' remix of Eric B and Rakim's 'Paid in Full'." He continues, "I am not sure if this was the remix that featured the now sadly demised and very much missed Ofra Haza, but I know that it was one of the 'Paid in Full' remixes that did and it jump started Ofra Haza's career outside of Isreal".
EMF
Scott sends the following, "EMF used the FZ1 on their Smash album which had the hit 'Unbelievable'. I believe they used it on every song on that album". Thanks for the information Scott.
Eye-D Productions
Frank writes, "The Casio used to be my only instrument for many years. I bought a Prophet 600 (!) a few years ago, along with an MKS-50." Be sure to visit his site, " Eye-D Productions".
Outlash
The FZ-1 is alive and still going strong in Outlashs The Covern". The track will be one to listen for in the mid-January, 1999, compilation from Thursday Club Recordings (TCR). Outlashs tune has already been well received by many lucky club goers in Britain. The tracks ONLY two instruments are a ONE meg equipped FZ-1 and a Novation Basstation (which powers the bassline). Tony, the musician behind Outlash adds, The track itself is like heavy breakbeats, with a distorted bassline and dark head noises and has an electro beat in the breakdowns. Over here in England, it's being called Nu Skool Breaks which is like a catch-all term for good mid-tempo breakbeat and electro music. For further information please contact Tony.
Psyche
Jesper lets us know that the "Canadian synhpop act Psyche who made their splendid album 'The Influence' just with a FZ-1 back in '89!'." Thanks for the tip Jesper.
Karlheinz Stockhausen
Mathias Wien passes on the following, " It might interest you that one of the pioneers of electronic music "Karlheinz Stockhausen" has at least one FZ-1 in his setup. I've got a CD with the electronic music of the opera 'FRIDAY' from LIGHT (wonderful music): on one booklet-photo taken at the Studio for Electronic Music at WDR, Cologne, you can see a FZ-1. I think the recordings were made in 1995 to 1996. Sometime around 1990 I was at a live performance with Stockhausen, where they used two or three FZ-1 for the realization of the electronic music 'SONG OF THE YOUTHS'."
