Karlo: I understand you were born in the Philippines.
Kamal: Yes, I was. It was my first home. I stayed here for six years. My father, and my grandfather - they all grew up here, in Manila, not in Puerto Azul, unfortunately.
Karlo: Do you produce your own shows?
Kamal: With the extent of production, especially when we're on location like this, a lot of ideas come from the VJs and the producers ideas mix - or, you know, in the studio, nothing's really scripted anymore. A lot of it's, like...
Karlo: Impromptu?
Kamal: Yeah. So in that sense, no, in actual production I don't have a title as a producer now.
Karlo: Being a VJ, that must mean you're quite busy....
Kamal: Who told you that? I'll tell you something, OK? Let's not let anybody tell you otherwise...This is the truth: VJs work about 3, 4 days a week. And that's great for me because it gives me a lot of time to do other things I'm into...I act, I've made a few films right now...
Karlo: Really? Films based in Hong Kong or Singapore?
Kamal: So far it's been in India, but I've just met some people in the Philippines who are asking me to do some stuff, but, let's see. At the moment, as long as the role is good and the production is of a certain standard, that's the main concern for me. Role is really important. Another thing I want you to know is that I'm a closet drummer. It's something I'm learning, you know? I'm trying to get good at.
Karlo: Do you have a tutor?
Kamal: An instuctor, you mean. Uh huh.
Karlo: What do you do on your weekends?
Kamal: On my weekends? Sometimes I involve myself in my scripts
Karlo: Do you take an active role in writing?
Kamal: No, just like learning the scripts, and in a lot of them I have to change my accents.
Karlo: What accents can you do?
Kamal: I can speak like an Indian with an Indian accent, speaking in English. Or, in one film I had to speak Hindi which is a language I don't know, so I had to, like, learn it. I had a lot of prep for that. And then, I love watching: I'm a movie buff. I spend a lot of time watching movies. We do a lot of barbecues at home, so the weekends are pretty good for that. I live in Singapore right now, 'cause that's where MTV is based. Occasionally I love to dance. Unfortunately going to the same club every time gets to be redundant. But I try to fit that in. And then I do some exercise; I work out. I just try and, like, I'm into variety and then I like my weekends to be really relaxed.
Karlo: What would be your dream vacation? What would you like to do that you haven't done?
Kamal: I'm a real beach person. That's why it's great being here. But something I've already done, but I was very young when I did it, and I'd love to do it again: an African safari, wildlife safari.
Karlo: Wow, you've done that before?
Kamal: Yeah, I've done it with my parents; this time I want to take a group of friends. I was about thirteen when I did it. Went to five countries in Africa. I travelled a lot.
Karlo: Do you have any plans of repeating this soon? Will your schedule permit it?
Kamal: Oh, gosh! (laughs) Our next project is gonna be Hong Kong during the turnover. We'll be covering that for MTV. But, yeah, whenever I can get some holiday time, sometimes it's a little tough, it's something that will be on the agenda at some point.
