Holly Elizabeth Hemby - Holly Elizabeth
Hemby Sistare, also known as (A.K.A.) Hollie Elizabeth Hemby Sustar
SURVIVOR, CIVIL WAR WIDOW, SINGLE
MOTHER OF FIVE CHILDREN
I AM SEEKING ANY LEAD ON HER PARENTS.
Holly Elizabeth Hemby Sistare, framed portrait after
1900
This is the framed family portrait of Holly Elizabeth
Hemby (1837 to 4 Jan 1902), as an older woman. She was the wife of James
Hiram Richardson Sistare(1835 to 21 Oct 1862), killed in the Civil War.
This is the only large family portrait of her that I know of and it was
first owned by probably by her son Barnum Alexander Sustare(10 Jan 1862
to 13 March 1951), passed down to his son Beverly Townsend Sustare (B.T.)
(3 Mar 1890 to 1 August 1965) and then to my mother, Nancy Chester Sustare
Sutton (17 Nov 1920 to 12 May 1997). I then inherited it after my beloved
mother died in 1997. Notes by Carol Lorraine Sutton, March 4, 2007, Sunday.
I took this photograph the day before March 3, 2007, it is slanted slightly,
because I did not want it to fall over and was afraid if it did, that the
glass would break. Size: about 28 by 24 inches. Note, this photo and over
52 others are in a file I made during Feb-March, 2007, on Ancestry.com
under the file name:Sutton and Sustare.

- Tombstone data: tombstone says :???
- I wonder if this is correct, or do I
have the data for Seburn's two wives. As Holly husband would have been
"wife of H.R. Sistare" for James Hiram Richardson Sistare?? C.L.S.
- {Note by Carol: So there is nothing in

no burial data. So now I am uncertain as to where I
got the data on her tombstone???,

- CIVIL WAR NOTES:
- Son of James Hiram Richardson Sistare (4), who was born in 1835
in Connecticut and died 21 October 1862, [L@@K at tombstone photograph],
during the Civil War near Winchester, Virginia, exactly three months later
at Cedar Creek Battle. J.R. Sistare was married in South Carolina
to Holly Elizabeth Hemby .(2nd Great-Grandparents).J H. R. Sistare was
buried in the Confederate Stonewall Cemetery. Quote*:"The sixth battle
that occurred in the Winchester area was the Battle of Cedar Creek on
- October 19, 1864. Despite the disabling reverses suffered at Winchester
on September 19 and at Fisher's Hill on September 22, Lt. General Early,
commanding the Second Corps of the Army
- of Northern Virginia, knew that he must still endeavor to prevent the
victorious Major General Philip H. Sheridan from returning detachments
of his force to General Ulysses S. Grant, opposing General Robert E. Lee
at Petersburg in eastern Virginia. He knew that to accomplish this task,
he would have to mount another offensive. Therefore, when Sheridan withdrew
northward from Harrisonburg, Early followed. The 2nd Corps reached Fisher's
Hill on October 13 and discovered the Federals encamped upon the slopes
north of Cedar Creek, encircling the stately mansion Belle Grove, just
south of Middletown, some 20 miles from Winchester. Reconnaissance convinced
Early at first that his position was too strong for his weakened army to
attack. Early had suffered heavy casualties among his officers and his
divisions were critically short in this respect. In numbers, the three
corps of Sheridan was greatly superior to Early's five divi-"from:

- Spelling changed often before the Civil War when
it became necessary to be more exact. The will of Dennis Hemby of NC in
late 1700's uses both spellings, HEMBY and HEMBY in the same document.
Other variations aer HEMBEY, HEMBREE, HAMBY and in SC in 1790 it was even
associated with EMBRY. The name originated in England as a place name.
Henby and Hemby seem to be the earliest. I have the source of a book HEMBY
if you are interested.

James
Ervin Sistare and Barnum Alexander Sistare |
James Ervin Sistare
and Barnum Alexander Sistare (on right)(our line) were identical twin sons of James Hiram Richardson Sistare
and his wife, Holly Elizabeth Hemby
Sistare, who lived in Lancaster County, South Carolina.
"They were born on a farm in Lancaster County, South Carolina, January
10, 1862. They had two older brothers, Taylor
Hemby Sistare and John
Thomas Sistare, and one sister, Matilda Jane Sistare. Their father went away
to war on July 21, 1862, (Private
J.H. R. Sistare of 2nd
Company-A-, R Regiment South Carolina Infantry,Confererate States Army, Civil
War) and
died near Winchester, Virginia, exactly three months later. The widowed
young mother (Holly Elizabeth Hemby
Sistare) had a hard struggle providing for her five
children. They moved from Souith Carolina to North Carolina about 1874
(?). In North Carolina their family name was mis-spelled "Sustar"
and "Sustare". The twins became prosperous farmers and good
citizens in Mecklenburg County. They helped to build schools and
served on school boards. Both served as deacons in the Baptist Church for
many years." Barnum founded in 1925 the 'Sustare Swimming Pool',an
institution of Matthews, NC, and still the largest Pool of Mecklenburg
County. |
- "Ervin married Mary Jane Ferguson
and Barnum married her sister, Sarah Amanda Ferguson
(Daughters of James R. Ferguson and his wife,
Martha Ellen Williams Ferguson.) Ervin and
"Jinny" had nine children, Barnum and Amanda had eight. Ervin
died August 15, 1931, and Barnum died, twenty years later, on March 13,
1951. They were buried in Mount Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery, near Matthews,
North Carolina."

SPELLING OF SURNAMES: Although
the two twins are both listed as going by the surname of "SISTARE"
in the text above. They, at least during their adult lives went by these
surnames: Sustar and Sustare.
- James Ervin used the surname of Sustar, or James Ervin
Sustar.
- Note there is NO "e" at the end.
- And his twin used the name:
- Barnum Alexander used the surnameof Sustare, or Barnum
Alexander Sustare.
- Note: Barnum used the "e" on the ending of
SUSTARE.
- The two indentical twins used the different surname spelling
in order to distinguish themself from one another, by name, as by looks,
they were the same.

Holly Elizabeth Hemby, who hid in a ditch with her two twin infant sons,
then 6 months old and a cow; while the Yankees were ransacking her house
and killing her livestock. After the plunder, Holly Elizabeth, used the
cow to provide milk for her two babies. She must have had in the ditch
with her their two older sons, Simpson Taylor Hemby Sistare and
John Thomas Sistare; or else they must have hid elsewhere during
the raid
- The four sons William, Aaron, James
and Hiram Sistare (note added:
William Gabriel Sistare, Aaron Jackson Sistare, James Delaney Hope Sistare,
James Hiram Richardson Sistare)all lost their lives in the Civil

- Hello Katina
- Cyrus was my great grandfather.
- I have a Website with all of Cyrus and Matilda's
children on it. My grandmother, Margaret Ann Hembree Baxter was Cyrus and
Matilda's daughter. I also put together a 26 page book with pictures about
their life as it has been passed down. But you will find plenty of pictures
on our
{BAXTER} family Website http://www.httpcity.com/jbaxter.
-
- Are you from Martha Ellen Hembree Johnson family?
She was my grandmother's sister.

- This is from the 1880 US Census CD-ROM, but I
haven't looked at the actual census page. Looks like the transcriber may
have transcribed the names incorrectly, but at least it's close enough
to tell it's them.
- Daughter Matilda Jane md. S.M. Mullis on March
25, 1884 in Union Co, NC.
- Son John Thomas md. Emma Rice on Mar 30, 1891
in Union Co, NC.
- Hope this helps a little.
