& coming to The Metropolitan Museum, New York, October 21,1996 to January 19, 1997

NOTE: This month has trickier questions and more than one choice is possibly the correct answer.

1. If you think that the English nun famous for her poignant, insightful, and heartfelt view on Art History, which airs on PBS Television, in the United States, that is Sister Wendy Beckett, is right about her views of Giorgione's famous painting in the Galleria dell'Accademia, in Venice, The Tempest; (1505), which are that Giorgione's painting is really about the very moment in time when, the exact point at which the lighting struck in the distance sky, that illuminated the two distinct scenes in the foreground, the one being the clothed man standing on the left and the unclothed woman with only a white sheet draped over her shoulder as she is breastfeeding her child on the right; as the two contrasting events occurring simultaneously and that those two scenes are just there to evoke mystery and question in our wonderment of life. Then the question arises in relation to Corot's landscape work in such paintings as La Cervara, Campagne de Rome (Kunsthaus, Zurich) and another similar work in the Louvre, Paris , both painted in 1827; both which share similar key ingredients , the stormy sky, the big distance landscape, the two groups of distinct figures each in it's own world; do you think Corot had in mind Giorgione and his painting The Tempest when he painted La Cervara, Campagne de Rome ?

The Answer is:

2. Corot's supremacy in the art of rendering outdoor light and his fresh and spontaneous approach to oil studies after nature was recognised by the Impressionists, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, and Edgar Degas, as outlined by the writing of Michael Clark. But it was his figure studies that set the standard for Degas, Renoir and even Picasso, as outlined by the writing of Madeleine Hours. Madeleine Hours perceptively writes; " About 1850, Corot executed one of his finest female figures, inaugurating a series of half-length portraits painted for pleasure in the studio. The Fair Maid of Gascony, has a serene strength, an almost sculptural solidity unique in 19th century painting. Figures of such power and aloofness will not be found again until:

The Answer is:

3. Who of women listed below would have realised that the portraits might have held the edge over the landscapes and that Corot's supreme gift to modern art were really his figure studies, and not his landscapes? One lady did.
