In fact the mixing of two cultures has brought about a better understanding of the many races that
live here in Singapore. On the other hand the locals get to see how the "ang mo" live.
The term Ang Mo is derived from a chinese dialect which was used to describe the white man
( in a different dialect it also stands for red hair, this was a trait found mainly in westerners )
It is hard to say how many different types of Eurasians there are in Singapore but you can say that
the majority came to Asia and Singapore during the time when merchant ships plied the seas
searching for new places to trade with and sell their goods. These entreprenuring young chaps were
mainly the Portuguese, Dutch and British. Other westerners did come too and in time migrated
across Asia.
Eurasians have come to see themselves as not several groups of people but one community.
One of the common questions asked was what is your nationality. Now being offspring of two sides
of the globe it made many stick to the Western side of their heritage. This was confusing as when
confronted with a person who looked Chinese but said they were English, or someone who claimed
to be French but looked Indian. This highlighted another problem, which religion to follow.
The answer most give is that freedom choice is the best way. The children will grow up knowing
more about other race's beliefs.
