ask the inpatients: bob dole

...................

q. Do you know Bob Dole?

A. I saw him once and he was wearing a red hat. He was in a Mason's parade. I guess he is a Mason. I don't know. I think he's probably crazy. That hat was something. My friend said, `that is a tam o' shanter. That guy is wearing a tam o' shanter.' It was a hot day too. I don't know. I guess anyone named after a banana. That was when I lived in Kansas City. My house had been sucked up into a tornado, so I was living in my van waiting for emergency relief. Which I never got.

q. Would you vote for him?

A. Who?

q. Are you registered to vote in this state (Washington)?

A. I don't think so. I can't vote anyway because I was convicted of a felony.

q.What did you do?

A. I was sitting in my car but not going anywhere, which is illegal in Kansas City. Actually it was a van. I already told you about the tornado. That was before they starting saying `twister' all the time.

q. Who would you vote for if you were registered to vote?

A. As president?

q. As president.

A. Sam Perkins. He always stays calm.

the interview with john k. was conducted in June of 1996, in the lower level vending machine area at Harborview Hospital, Seattle
