1st Annual Jasper Ridge Action Open
By: TD Greg Rose
The 1st Annual Jasper Ridge Action Open was held December 9th at the Motor Inn. It was not a USCF rated event. In what was termed by many as a "small, little fun chess tournament," Jim Sawaski of Newberry won the play-off game with Dale Fritter of Marquette, to capture first place. Dale, for his efforts, won the second place trophy.
Pable Ramos, a 16 year old foreign exchange student of Negaunee High School from Mexico, took the Top Junior Trophy, playing all the adults as well as the other junior participants.
Someone said at the tournament that this is more like the reason why the chess association was created in the first place, "To bring chess opportunities to the chess players here in the Upper Peninsula."
