The Wisconsin Junior Open was held on November 8 and 9, 1997 at the
University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh. There was two sections, an open section and a
reserve section for players rated under 1000. With over 150 students in
attendance, it was one of the record years for the tournament according to Mike
Nietman, president of the Wisconsin Chess Association. Justin Ceterski was the
co-champion, winning the tournament with a perfect score of 5 wins. He tied
with a college student from Marquette University. Ken Ceterski and Tom Goman,
both from the Iron Mountain Chess Club, also finished with good performances in
their respective sections. The tournament was directed by Matt Merill and Chris
Krumenauer. |
On December 20 and 21, 1997, the Herman Schramm Memorial tournament was
held at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh. There was a record turnout at
this tournament with over 50 players participating. George Ljaschenko finished
first with an undefeated score of 5 wins. Justin Ceterski placed second with 4
wins and one draw. Kelly Borman directed the tournament. The Wisconsin Chess
Tour awards were also distributed at the Herman Schramm. Guy Hoffman won first
place in the Wisconsin tour with an almost perfect attendance at the tournaments
last year. Justin Ceterski won the top junior prize, and Ken Ceterski was
awarded the top Class C. |
