With 22 players participating, there was plenty of competition. Dmitry Olevskiy, a 2300 from Belarus, took first place on tie break. Tom Ceterski finished a close second, losing only on tie break points. Jerry Truitt had a good finish with third place. Ken Ceterski won the 1400 - 1699 section, and Ken Charette took second place in the 1400 - 1699 section. Jeremy Truitt won the U1400/UNR section with Tony Chen taking second in that section. Pat Reed won the Beginner section with 3.5 points and Matt Berg place second. The prized consisted of bars of silver with an engraving in one of them stating the place that each person received. Coupons for free sandwiches at Hardees and Subway were given out at the end of the tournament to all of the participants. Everyone had a great time and enjoyed the free chess tournament. Thanks is extended to Steve Lubinski for directing the tournament and to the Michigan Tech chess club for organizing this great event. Special thanks to Iron Mountain Chess Club, MTU Chess Club/Team, Wadsworth Hall Cafeteria, Memorial Union Board, Subway of Houghton, Hardee's of Houghton, and Undergraduate Student Government for making this all possible. 1997 Michigan Tech.
