2001 Great 8 Winter Games a Success The Great 8 Winter Games were held on February 17, 2001 at Kingsford, Michigan. With a wide variety of activities for the students to participate in, chess was one that attracted a large number of participants. There were 27 students in grades 4 to 8 that played in the unrated chess tournament while their parents watched the action. The Ceterski family, Martha, Ken & Tom directed the tournament by splitting it up into separate sections.
All of the students had an excellent time. None of the students had to worry about providing equipment since all of the equipment was provided by the Dickinson County Chess Club. Medals were provided by the Community Schools for first though fifth place in each grade. Therefore, most of the students received an award plus were able to enjoy a day of exciting chess.
Laura Perez was the only 4th grade girl but earned her 1st place metal with an unbeaten scored of 3-1 to tie for first against the 4th grade boys. See the newsletter for the crosstables.
On Wednesday night, Feb. 21, at the regular meeting of the Negaunee VFW Chess Club, Pablo Ramos, a 16 year old student at Negaunee High School, took on all comers in giving a simultaneous exhibition. His score of 2 wins, 2 draws and 3 losses doesn't really reflect his efforts at playing all these games at once. He managed to force a draw with me, by repetitive position, when in the endgame I was a pawn up. He stated after the match that he might like to do this again, even though it was hard. I am very proud of this young man, as his chess coach, playing against mostly adults in these matches. Reporting-Gregory S. Rose
