Favourite Poetry
UNDER CONSTRUCTION
I like poetry. I like poetry a lot. Unfortunately, I can't write it worth a damn, so instead, I collect really cool poems that I especially enjoy and keep them in one spot for easy access. Plus it let's me demonstrate my diverse taste and knowledge of cultural pursuits. In this way I can falsely boost my image of self-worth and intelligence, and gain some weak sense of superiority over you, the reader.
One of my favourite poets is from the core group of Beat poets from the late fifties and early sixties, Gary Snyder. To read more about him, check out my Literary Freaks section, but for now just know that he's a Buddhist and environmentalist, and he wrote Night Highway Ninety-Nine. You can find really cool poems in many non-traditional places, but I never thought I'd find a whole bunch of great stuff in the back of a graphic novel (read 'long comic book') called Arkham Asylum. These were about the various bad guys that Batman had put away and were very insightful windows into the crazed minds of Joker and Clayface. They were written by Grant Morrisson. Of course there are more conventional places to find poetry (poetry books) and more conventional poets ('critically acclaimed'). This doesn't necessarily mean they're bad. Michael Ondaatje is a Pulitzer Prize winner and has put out some books with cool titles including Rat Jelly, and one called There's a Trick with a Knife I'm Learning to do where I found the following two poems: Application for a Driving License which is kinda short and dark and The Time around Scars which brings back some personal memories of my own. Leonard Cohen does cool stuff too, and although not everyone may call it poetry, I certainly do, and frankly, that's all that matters to me. So here's one of his about a Love-soaked bed.
