Wizard of the Pigeons
Let me call your attention
to a man closing his heart
and whistling a happy tune
He swore it wouldn’t hurt
this time
but his tears
he just can't hide
Love he believes
is the worst of lies
As he gazes upon the world
with his cold orphan eyes
A shield will soon
replace this ragged worn disguise
You have shown them all
he thinks
no one could fool you
His life has always been
but a series of accidents
awaiting an emergency room
Soon there will be
no evidence that he
was ever even here
He knows this
fully understands it
but still he doesn’t care
None will ever know his secrets
or the treasures
that he held so dear
He will die alone and forgotten
left with just
his twisted sense of pride
Only some pigeons will miss him
when his park bench is empty
on that day he dies
