It all started with the US KRH86 NYC Reunion ...
Krystal's Restaurant and Bakery

In Queens, along Roosevelt Ave, there is a string of Filipino restaurants, stores and services, even a PNB! However, at one corner at 69th street there’s a restaurant and bakery called Krystal’s. (Besides that’s not a number that one could forget! *wink*)

It’s a party, and we need a cake! I tell Nick, “C’mon, c’mon, let’s go there! Breakfast pa!” So we bring our eldest, pick up Mitzie and her eldest, and ____silog breakfasts here we come! For 5-7 dollars you can get, tapsilog, tocilog, longsilog, dasilog, etc, and whole bunch of other stuff for lunch/dinner, too. Lots of rice and ulam, I couldn’t even finish my breakfast.

As we were eating and again, reminiscing about our college days, we took note of the pan de sal at the counter. Well, those dormitory late nights weren’t complete without pan de sal and palaman. Mitzie and I threw in personal orders for Daricream and PanDeSal, and other bakery goods for home and hotel.

We also put in the cake order. Oh, the cake is so pretty, and I’ve been eating it since Saturday night. It’s a half pandan and half ube cake.

What can I say? Late night, alcohol, travel, or whatnot the day before, and throw in below freezing temps with a chance of snow. Nuh-uh, sorry, Liberty Island didn’t look like it was going to happen. I gave Sam a wake up call, “Sam, here’s your wake up call, I don’t know if you’re awake, but I am!”

What to have for breakfast? Well, people started to come in. Mitzie found Peter in the lobby, and we called around. Merle and Patrick arrived. Xenia, Sam, Winston, Maida, Marife, Lorelei, and I were starting to look for Filipino food. After some debate, what the heck, we started for Queens, to Krystal!

I don’t quite like riding the letter trains. The seats are at angles, and they’re the old scoop your tushie style seats. We took the F train instead of the 7, because of possible train delays during the weekend. Fun trip, see the pictures and even miniclips of the trip. If you can’t sit, you can stand and hang on, and possibly entertain people on the pole like a stripper.

After a 3-4 block walk, which includes a pogi shot of Winston, we make it to 69th and Roosevelt. The stores were open now, and we all went to Krystal. The upstairs room has a projector and screen with a Dolphy comedy on. We ordered, mmm, mmm… and Sam really ordered, as in a lot. It was a Fiesta galore! Even Merle’s Patrick tried out the dinuguan, I mean, the Chocolate Meat.

Despite the full tummies, there was still room for a little bit of dessert. Marissa, Peter, and Xenia ordered brazo de Mercedes, leche flan, and cassava cake. The first two were a delight, but sorry to say the cassava cake sucked. It looked like cornbread, might have been like cardboard, and I think Xen needed a hacksaw to slice it.

At the end, a very pleasant surprise: Thank you Maida for the treat! As Peter said, “Sayang! Sana nag-order tayo ng marami!”
