The Beggar

Poem by Ann Lewis

It was a cold winter's night and the snow fell down
Like little tiny petals from a pure white flower
I opened my curtains and peeped out from my snug warm room
And beheld a sight which made my heart go heavy with gloom

Under my window stood an old beggar man
So lean, so hungry, so pale, so wan.
I took pity, opened my door, and asked him in
And a beam of light spread over his face so thin

"Thank you, mam," he said, between sips of hot tea
"The world is now a happier place for me.
"How cam I thank you, how can I repay
"The kindness you have shown me this day?"

I looked at him, and I replied
"You can't know the joy you have given me inside
"And I thank you for helping to let me share
"My home, my fire, and my feelings to care."
