GIL EANES
Portuguese navigator, shield-bearer of Infant D. Henrique, he was the first to sail beyond Cape Bojador, clearing the superstitious terror inspired by this promontory, thus giving birth to the era of the great Discoveries (1434).

PORTUGUESE  SEA

Oh salted sea, how much of your salt
Are tears from Portugal!
For crossing you by, how many mothers have cried,
How many sons in vain have prayed!
How many brides unmarried remained
For you to be ours, oh sea!

Was it worthy? Everything's worthy
If the soul is not small.
He who wants to go beyond Bojador
Must go beyond pain.
God gave the sea danger and abyss,
But in it He mirrored the sky.
