FERNÃO DE MAGALHÃES
Portuguese navigator and explorer, with a brilliant military career in India and Africa.

He was to be the first European to sail across the Pacific Ocean, and the first person to circumnavigate the globe.

During his circumnavigation of the globe in 1520, he discovered and gave his name to the strait of Magellan.

FERNÃO DE MAGALHÃES

In the valley a bonfire clears.
The whole earth is shaken by a dance.
And deformed and disordered shadows
In dark bright lights from the valley go
Suddenly by the hillsides,
Disappearing in the darkness.

To whom belongs the dance that terrifies the night?
It's the Titans, sons of the Earth,
Dancing of the sailor's death
Who wanted to encircle the maternal visage -
Encircle it, from the man, the first one -,
Entombed at last on the faraway beach.

Dancing, they know not that the daring soul
Of the dead still commands the fleet,
A pulse without a body steering at the helm
The vessels at the remnants of the show's end:
That even absent knew how to besiege
The whole earth with his embrace.

He raped the Earth. But they do not
Know it, and dance in the solitude
And deformed and disordered shadows,
Disappearing in the horizons,
Climb the valley from the hills
Of the mute mountains.
