JOÃO GONÇALVES ZARCO
Portuguese navigator and noble of the house of infant D. Henrique.

Commander of caravels, he discovered the island of Porto Santo (1418) with Tristão Vaz Teixeira, and then Madeira island, with Bartolomeu Perestrelo (1419).

He always helped the infant on his nautical enterprises.

THE INFANT

God wants, man dreams, the work is born.
God wanted the land to be only one,
The sea to unify, and no longer to separate.
He blessed you, and you unveiled the foam,

And the white border went from island to continent,
Cleared, running, until the end of the world,
And suddenly the whole earth could be seen,
Emerging, round, from the deep blue.

He who blessed you raised you portuguese.
Of the sea and not of you He gave us sign.
The Sea was accomplished, the Empire dismantled.
Lord, what's left to accomplish is Portugal!
