During my collecting travels, I have found that I have been tending to go out of my way to pick up games with a horror theme. I think, because I love horror movies, and related horror items, that these games are 'funner' (is that a word?) for me. I've decided to put these games on a special page, just for kicks... =)
Games for the Atari 2600
Well, might as well start with my favorite. I used to play Haunted House over and over... never tiring of it. I used to imagine myself stumbling through a dank and dreary old house, encountering all sorts of creatures. My heart would race a bit when that thunder and lightning would warn of an impending encounter with a nasty thingy... Next is Frankenstein's Monster, a strange little game it is. I traded an IBM PCjr cart for this one, because I would not be denied!!! I tried to play it, but couldn't figure it out. Need to find those darn instructions. Ghost House, my first Xonox double-ender! It has Spike's Peak on the other end, but I was really interested in Ghost House (of course!). You start out in a graveyard, chasing a skeleton. You have to touch him (it?) a certain number of times before you can advance to the house. Once inside, you encounter some snakes and go through some doors... after that I'm lost. I always seem to end up outside again. Oh, well... more instructions to get! Who ya gonna call? Ghostbusters of course. Based on the movie of the same name, you have to run around the city and dispose of those ectoplasmic baddies. I've played this on other systems, and haven't gotten too far in this version (so many games, so little time!!). The label on this next one is pretty bad, but its King Kong by Tigervision. The game is a lame clone of Donkey Kong. Maybe they spent all the money on the license... a fine example of wasted potential.
Games for the Intellivision
Dracula was pretty funny the first time I played it. You chase people around town and suck'em dry. Get as many as you can before sunrise. Its surprisingly addictive, once you get the hang of it. A nice game, and one of the better ER's floating around out there.
Games for the Nintendo (NES)
The first one here is Chiller, a shooting gallery set in a graveyard. Its certainly not the best one out there, but the tombstone has the epitaph "Dead People are Cool", and that alone made it worth getting. Jason hacks away at you in Friday the 13th. Good ol' Freddy lives forever in Nightmare on Elm Street. Oh no, there goes Tokyo! In Godzilla you team up with Mothra to defend the earth from invaders from Planet X. You move along a grid, and battle other DaiKaiju. Its pretty funny watching big G skipping and attacking in the side scrolling part of this game. Just when you thought it was safe to back in the water, they ship Jaws. On a less serious (??) horror note, the Addams Family goes digital in Fester's Quest.
Games for the Atari Jaguar
Aliens vs Predator is combination of two good 'monster' movies. You play either a Marine, an Alien or a Predator. Each has different strengths and abilities to use in their quest. In my opinion, one of the best games made for the Jag.
Games for the Nintendo Virtual Boy
If I read this correctly, this one's called Panibon (please correct me if I'm wrong.) Its a tetris-like game, but it has the classic monsters. Well, they have been Japanified so they look like they've been crossed breed with Mario and Peach. =)
