Worth a Thousand Words
Pictures Should Tell a Story

One of Denise's earliest memories was of seeing this "Indian maiden" print in the dining room of her paternal grandparents' house.

It made a tremendous impression: The images were exciting and memorable. The painting seemed to tell a story. You could imagine different aspects of the story: how the couple and their dog got into the predicament, whether they would get out of it, and what the couple was like.

As an adult, Denise is not satisfied with still life paintings. Nor is Chuck. We collect artwork that tells a story or leads your imagination to wander.

After years of looking, Denise bought a copy of this 1938 print. The title of the print is A Hasty Retreat. The artist's name is Walter Haskell Hinton, who also painted at least two other similar paintings with Indian braves, maidens, grizzley bears, and dogs.

The image is courtesy of Dean Patzer from whom Denise bought the print through www.ebay.com, where she found an entire subculture of folks who collects Indian maiden prints! She has since acquired two other prints by Hinton on ebay.
