Fall Of Humankind
The night was cold and cliched. Rain came down on this backwater town in the middle of nowhere, but no one cared because it wasn't Halloween. Not really. Not in this town where the only 'holidays' are Christmas and Easter. Not in this town where pumpkins are only used for pies, not carving. But still it's a nice town, with no crime, no drugs, no gangs. Still some children were out trick-or-treating, for what it was worth, a few candy bars, some pennies, nickels and dimes. I can hear their voices, see their costumes, their young innocent faces. They couldn't have known the Martians would invade that night. They were captured, held for ransom. The town paid, giving the Martians their only natural resource. Gold. All 500 pounds of it. The Martians then took over the planet with no resistance. The Martians ended war, crime, hunger, and all other problems. Except one. Greed. Even the Martians couldn't stop people from wanting more than the next person. They did try to stop it by giving everyone the same stuff, but to no avail. As one Martian writer put it in their equivalent of Time Magazine: "Terrans are greedy even to the point of taking their neighbour's cow so they can have more milk. This is why all the Terran governments always had so many problems. Every country, state, county, and city wanted more than their neighbour. Aside from religious conflicts, this greed is their greatest downfall." The Martian was right.
