Saint Teresa of Avila has been a beacon for me in art, life and spirituality for more than twenty years. I would like to share her with those of you not yet familiar with her, and I would like to share my idiosyncratic take on her with those many of you who are. Life of St. Teresa of Avila is a brief biographical sketch of the Grand Wild Woman of Avila, which will at least give you a bare bones notion of the life of this very remarkable woman.


Diario de la Fiesta de Santa Teresa is my illuminated journal, in eighteen short chapters, of the events of the celebration of the Festival of Saint Teresa, which I attended in her birthplace of Avila, Spain in October, 1996. Many synchronous meetings occurred during this time. Perhaps the most intriguing of all was with a wild woman who lives in Avila today, drawn there on her own spiritual quest. Teresa's House shows an artwork by Cheryl De Ciantis dedicated to Saint Teresa, together with a description of the symbolism and significances involved.




The Transverberation: An Event in the Mystical Life of Saint Teresa is a description, in St. Teresa's own words, of being pierced in the heart by an angel with an arrow of ecstasy and love. Many are familiar with this famous incident from its depiction by Bernini in "The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa." What are we to make of the sensuous language with which she describes it? As you will also see from this selection from her writings, St. Teresa was remarkably level headed.
