IN THE WOODS

By:  Betty Welner   aka   {Betty}

My walk in the woods became more than just that.
I had reached the end of the path
when a strange sensation came over me
Instead of turning, as I would normally do,
I continued off the path and into the woods
I kept walking as if being called
Bekoned to someplace by someone
I came upon an area covered with ferns
surrounded by poplar trees
I could taste the damp earth and moss in the air
It was silent
No birds, no rusteing leaves, silent
I closed my eyes, listening to silence
The air about me changed somehow, electric, warm
I could feel the trees around me,
feel the bushes and the grass
There was a sensation of the ground wrapping
its hands about my ankles
Pulling me closer, becoming a part of it
Ferns brushed against my legs, loving caresses
A breeze glided through then,
whispering sweet nothings
I smiled
I opened my eyes and looked around me
There was no breeze
No ferns against my legs
No earth upon my feet
Just a passing memory of love
