WAITING

by:   Cari aka  Cheep

The excitement of waiting welled up in her throat as she stared out the window on the bleak morning. She had been up for what seemed hours, getting ready for this special day.

Extra care had been taken to ensure she looked her best. After all, this was a very important day in her life. One for which she had waited an awfully long time. Things had to be just perfect. She had brushed her hair the allotted number of strokes and then some, she couldn't quite remember, but it shone like gold.

The hours that had been spent rummaging through her closet and dresser mulling over every piece of clothing she had. Until she found that perfect dress. She smiled when she put it on for the final time, remembering all the trial runs she had put the poor thing through this last week. She knew she looked just beautiful.

Time seemed to be at a stand still. Why was it always like this when she wanted something. It could never be here soon enough in her opinion. The clock chimed another quarter. Of course she didn't know what time it was. That was unimportant, because it didn't matter, she would sit at this window and wait all day if that was to be the case. Nothing would move her now that she was positioned just right to see the full length of the street and drive. She wouldn't miss a thing from this angle.

What was that sound? Oh! Just the neighbor's dog. Why didn't they lock that thing up so it wouldn't scare her like that. They know how important today is. Her heart is beating faster. It must be time soon. Her breathing now coming in short tiny gasps. "No use working yourself into a tithy", she thought. Now who used to tell her that?

"Oh why is it taking so long? Maybe if I think of something else I can pass the time. Oh, that won't work."

Her impatience starting to show. In a heartbeat the time is here. The sound of the car door. The footsteps crunching the gravel underfoot. That flashing smile! In a second she is out through the front door running into his arms.

She flew to him as fast as her six year old legs could carry her. "DADDY! DADDY! I knew you'd come!"
