Starborn

I'd have been starborn if I'd had my way--
a comet or a meteor or a lowly asteroid,
these would have been fine enough.
But how grand to be a star!
Who could resist the rather
particulate matter of self-fusion?
It is a dream
dreamt by the Greeks--
that men and deeds shine down upon us
in forms of stars joined together
to tell and teach and sing.

I would join them in that long life
and finally diminish
to end in fire:
A boisterous explosion that seeds life anew
within the glory of things past.

Embers glowing in a nebula
of horsehead fashion
or ring, or brilliant crab
or even molded bright
in the cloudy shape of God.
