Michael Sylvester (left) was first and foremost, a friend of my brother Colin Lesch and Eric Field. Michael was in Toronto to visit his old "buds" from the teenage days back in Cape Town. If there is anyone still alive out there , who had ever heard of the SEAWEEDS, Mike, Colin , Eric Field, Roddy Field, Mervyn Lesch, Percy and Tony Jordan, Alex Voicey, Louis Miller, Ivan Klaasen, "Bopper" and Clive Campbell, Steven and Gregory Sylvester, Basil Preyser and Gregory Erinzen, "King" David and to a lesser extent, Greg Field and myself, were the founders of the "Seaweeds". They were the hearthrobs of many a teenage lass whose parents were open-minded enough, or just plain dumb enough, to allow their young daughters to spend the Xmas holidays on the sandy beaches of Kommetjie in the late 60's with these beachbums. Well needless to say, Michael was still recanting those days with his buddies recently, just like it was yesterday. He did admit though, that he experienced a dreadful couple of years, after the "Southern Cross", bearing a half dozen of his closest friends, had pulled out of Table Bay on the first part of a journey over to Canada. It was a tough adjustment for him. To compound his sorrow, Percy Jordan and Alec Voicey also soon left the shores of SA bound for Australia. These were as close-knit a bunch teenagers, as one could ever encounter. But even after 31 years, that "Seaweed" bond is ever present ! Mike Sylvester was here on a mission -- to ensure that this special bond would NEVER be broken. And, he did a good job of re-uniting the old gang. Over the years Mike got over the loss of seeing his fellow "Weeds" emigrate and currently runs his own successful air-conditioning business in Cape Town. He has also busied himself in local politics and is currently president of the Rate Payers Association in Blackheath -- a far cry from those "Seaweed" teenage days. Good going Mike! And finally, a special word of thanks to him for taking time off from his business to pay his "pellies" a very, very special visit , as short as it was. We loved having you here Mike !!. GO WEEDS GO !! Terry Lesch.
