It's a bright day out there -- bright white snow in the sunshine -- sun glare everywhere. Here's a picture of our driveway taken about quarter to nine this morning, just before my daughter hopped into her Honda Civic and dashed off to her 9:30 class (for which she could not possibly have arrived on time).
As the sun got higher in the sky the snow became blindingly bright -- a real sunglasses day -- but what a beautiful blue sky. (Compare this scene with the same view yesterday.) Friday Five 1. What was the last song you heard? I'm not sure if this qualifies as "a song" -- but the most recent music I listened to earlier this afternoon was Paul Creston's Symphony No.2, Opus 35. The last actual song -- as in pop song -- would have been something by Poe (because my wife had left a Poe CD in the player and I listened to some of that before I played the Creston CD. [Paul Creston, 1906-1985, American composer, quite successful in the 1940's, worked more in a classical mode than in the atonal clang-bang stuff popular with trendy oh-so-avante-garde 1950's-60's music critics and spent much of that era doing film and television scores, but I think he is getting more recognition as the mid-century fads fade away. His son Tim was a roommate of mine in college.] 2. What were the last two movies you saw? The last two movies I saw in a theatre were the second Lord of the Rings and the second Harry Potter. (Saw them both around the same time, several weeks ago, can't remember in which order.) The last movie I saw on DVD was a strange little movie called Igby Goes Down -- Nancy and I thought it was interesting but both agreed that it was somehow a generation out-of-date, that if it had come out sometime in the 1970's it would have been hailed as a great movie, in tune with rebellious youth, etc. The other last move rented on DVD was probably that Goldie Hawn and Susan Sarandon comedy, The Banger Sisters. (Hmm, two Susan Sarandon movies, she played Igby's mother.) 3. What were the last three things you purchased? Not counting groceries, the last three things I purchased were:
This is difficult because I am somewhat limited in mobility for a few weeks, certainly on this weekend... so things that I might normally do (like laundry or go for a run) are ruled out... However, I will need to go grocery shopping; I need to get set for doing income taxes (need to do that soon 'cause I expect to have a refund coming); need practice a little Java programming (literally "little" -- J2ME, the kind of code that could run on a cell phone or maybe a PDA); need to stay off my feet as much as possible so my heel can heal. 5. Who are the last five people you talked to? (1) my younger son ("Sean"); (2) Sean's girlfriend; (3) postal carrier (there was a package for Nancy so she brought the mail to the front door and rang the bell -- which was very convenient 'cause there was no way I could get out to the mailbox); (4) my daughter; (5) my wife.
Yes, I was placing a lot of faith in his dislike of walking in snow because it would have been very difficult for me to retrieve him if he had decided to go out and explore... but he really hates touching snow. |
