Friday Five 1. Is your hair naturally curly, wavy, or straight? Long or short? Slightly wavy. Longer than average (leaving aside aging rock musicians, etc.). 2. How has your hair changed over your lifetime? A lot more of it is grey. Hairline at forehead has receeded. You do recall that I have not been a teenager for a few years, right? I now have more forehead than I used to have. My hair isn't getting thin on top, no central bald spot -- the thinning is happening in the front, on the forehead. When I was college age (actually, right around the time the VW Beetle picture on my index page) I had a dream (a nightmare? *grin*) that I was older, much older, middle-aged at least, and I was looking in a mirror and saw that my forehead had made great inroads into my hair. In recent years I have looked in the mirror after stepping out of the shower and realized that my dream was getting close to being true. Oh, if you looked at me right now you might not realize this -- the way I wear my hair covers the upper portion of my forehead. That, by the way, is coincidence; I've worn my hair pretty much the same way for decades, only the length has varied. It was only by looking at myself in the mirror with wet hair plastered to my head that I first became aware of the extent of hairline movement a few years ago and now it has receeded even further... and eventually the acres of extra forehead will be evident even when my hair is not wet and plastered down. (My consolation is that Clint Eastwood's forehead seems to have done the same thing and I don't think it looks too bad.) 3. How do your normally wear your hair? As noted above, generally longer than average, parted in middle. About ten years ago I was wearing it much longer, had a pony tail that I liked very much. My wife hated the ponytail and when we went out together she usually asked that I wear my hair straight down (which was okay by me). 4. If you could change your hair this minute, what would it look like? It would be more like I wore it ten years ago: long, shoulder-length, usually tied back in a ponytail. (I'm not likely to do this -- besides my wife hating ponytails on guys -- it's just too much trouble, looks very sloppy while growing into the longer length, takes forever to dry after shower or swimming, too hot when running in the summer, etc.) 5. Ever had a hair disaster? What happened? The thing that first pops into my mind at this question goes back to early in my senior year of high school. I had worn my hear longer than average even back then, mostly in the greasy teenage rebel without a cause mode, although by my senior year I was moving toward something I considered similar but more poetic and bohemian. (I've told this story in somewhat greater detail somewhere on this site, but I don't have time to look for it.) I had a college admissions interview coming up at Yale and I let my high school guidance counselor talk me into getting a dorky flattop hair cut for the interview -- and then I discovered that they were taking yearbook pictures the next week! Arrrrghhh! Fitness and such: okay, so I've not put little workout and weight charts on my June entries. That's cause I've been so busy that I have posted very few entries this month... the charts would have been bigger than the entry. That does not mean I've been goofing off. For example: Saturday 06/14 -- ran 5.5 miles Sunday 06/15 -- 8 mile bike ride Monday 06/16 -- ran 3.5 miles Tuesday 06/17 -- no workout Wednesday 06/18 -- ran 3.5 miles Thursday 06/19 -- ran 4 miles |
