Happy Halloween -- 10/31/03 | |

| I have stocked up on candy. We usually have what seems like a ton of candy.
This year I bought a ton and a half. There are lots of kids in our neighborhood, more every year. The weather is very mild today and it is supposed to be very mild tonight. That should bring out large numbers of ghosts and ghouls and witches and ballerinas and cowboys and Barbies and kings and queens and princesses and hobos and purple dinosaurs and... And besides all that, Nancy's students now know where she lives, so I imagine we will have an increase in the number of eighth-graders stopping by. I've got to put up some fake spiderwebbing on the front porch. Somewhere I have a string of pumpkin lights but I can never seem to find them when Halloween time rolls around. Nancy and I had picked up three pumpkins a while ago. We've had them on the front porch for decoration, but we've never found the time to carve them. I doubt that even just one of them could be carved in time. (I'm working from home -- this is my lunch break -- but I have vast amounts of work to get done and I doubt that I can carve out enough time out of the rest of the day to be able to carve a pumpkin... even though I started work around six a.m.) NaNoWriMo starts tomorrow. (Well, to be technical, I guess it starts at midnight tonight, but I am not planning on sitting down at the keyboard at midnight.) I am beginning to feel a bit daunted by the prospect of attempting to write 50,000 words during the month of November. What have I got myself into? I have vacation days available and I was thinking about popping three or four into the month so that I could catch up if I fell behind, but I have a lot of work to do at work so I don't know if I will be able to do that. I've not cheated on NaNoWriMo -- I haven't written a single word in advance, no sandbagging -- but I've also not put any time or thought into planning. I had planned on planning. I was going to name some characters and a town and lay out some thoughts about a possible direction, but somehow never got around to it. So tomorrow morning I'm going to get up, eat breakfast while reading the morning paper, pour another cup of black coffee, and sit down in front of this computer and open up WordPro and.... Well, I guess I'll just have to hope words will come out. |
