Bed and Breakfast -- 02/15/04

Bed and Breakfast? Well, I'm answering this week's Sunday Brunch:questions...

1. Are you a morning person or night owl?
I'm a bit of both. All of my life -- since earliest childhood -- I've been a night person. And my children have all inherited this from me. (Nancy, on the other hand, is definitely not a night person and is rarely found awake past midnight.) However, at some point, twenty years or so ago, I went from being someone who needed multiple alarms to get up, to being the person who gets up first and makes the coffee and wakes up everyone else. (This is one of the problems that Nancy faces when business trips take me out of town -- she has to set multiple alarms to wake up instead of having me wake her up by turning on the morning TV news and bringing her breakfast.) This isn't to say that I leap out of bed in the morning -- it's more like stumbling around, bumping into walls and furniture -- and although I usually am up by six a.m., a couple of times a month I just keep slapping the snooze button until closer to seven (and then it becomes a mad scramble). I certainly can't seem to do what I once used to do, get up just past five a.m., start coffee and do stretches and warm-up exercises, then be out the door at 5:30 to run three miles or so, come back, wake everyone else up, take a shower, dress, and be out the door on my way to work by 6:45 or 6:50 (for a 26 mile commute).

2. What is the last thing you do before bed?
Brush my teeth.

3. What time do you usually wake up?
Usually between 5:45 and 6:15 on a weekday. Sometimes I get up a little bit earlier; once in a while, as noted above, it's a bit later. On weekends I may sleep in a bit and get up between 7:00 and 7:30 -- Nancy was out-of-town last night (niece's confirmation) and I had trouble sleeping so I didn't get up until 8:30 or so this morning.

4. Do you eat breakfast regularly?
Yes. As they say, it's the most important meal of the day. Besides which, I cannot function without something. This is sometimes a problem on business trips and I have learned to scope out potential breakfast sites (when you are usually working on a meal allowance of maybe thirty bucks a day, you can't go for fifteen dollar hotel breakfasts) so that I will know for sure I can at least grab a bagel. I have learned from experience that if I totally skip breakfast (coffee is an essential ingredient but actual food is required at some point) I will have a headache by ten or eleven.

5. What is your favorite breakfast food?
Coffee, juice, three fried eggs (over easy), bacon, sausage, home fries, pancakes with maple syrup, whole wheat toast with butter, more coffee. Oh... you mean for real? Cereal. To be specific, most mornings it is Raisin Nut Bran with skim milk. I will rotate various other cereals in for variety from time to time, but Raisin Nut Bran is pretty much my standard breakfast food. Sometimes (depending on what is available) I will add fruit to the cereal (blueberries or strawberries or sliced banana). This must be preceded and followed by coffee.

Gee, I thought I had a chance at being first -- nobody else had linked when I started this, but now it looks like two people have posted ahead of me.
