Almost Spring -- 03/19/04

Thank goodness it's Friday. This has been an exhausting week.

I worked from home Monday through Thursday. Today was the first day I went to the office all week. There was just so much work to do... each day I put in between ten and twelve hours. Today I only did eight hours -- but they were busy hours, lunch was about fifteen minutes squeezed in between telephone conference calls. (What it is, is there are usually three of us on my team, but one of us is off on a different assignment for a month or so... thus too much work.)

Snow Tuesday, snow Wednesday, snow Thursday, snow today. Driving was kind of sloppy this morning but when I left work (around 4:30 in the afternoon) there was sunshine and blue sky (and some clouds as well, but still it was quite a contrast with earlier in the day). I had thought that Saturday was supposed to be rainy but now it appears that both Saturday and Sunday will be mild (mid-40s) and partly cloudy.

SPRING is only a few hours away!

Okay, it's time for the Friday Five:

If you...

1. ...owned a restaurant, what kind of food would you serve?


Stephanie DoubleU thought she would have a restaurant with multiple rooms, one serving Italian, one Indian, etc. I understand that because I am fond of many different kinds of cooking and she made me hungry as she listed foods from various nations. However, I think I would run a small comfortable place -- one with a pub-like feeling -- that served an eclectic mix of foods: pizza and pasta and burgers and fish & chips and good soups and salads. And good beer. Come to think of it, something very much like The Mews.

2. ...owned a small store, what kind of merchandise would you sell?

I think I'd like to have a bookstore.

3. ...wrote a book, what genre would it be?

Well, if not The Great American Novel, I'd like to write science fiction.

4. ...ran a school, what would you teach?

I have been fascinated with the idea of running a school since I was a college undergraduate. (That means for a very long time.) Besides having taught professionally in junior and senior high school level (English) and college (computer programming) and in the computer industry (various high-end programming solutions for computer professionals), I have been involved in my children's education as a parent/volunteer over many years. Adam attended The Susquehanna School (a small private elementary school in Binghamton, NY -- they called themselves "progressive" but had a strong concern for academic achievement) for his first four years of school and if my imaginary school were to be an elementary school, it would be similar to that school. If it were to be on the high school level it would be a school that had a strong emphasis on math and science, on history and literature, and also on the creative arts. However, it would not be a cloistered academic bubble; students would be involved in the community and would have opportunities for work and for interaction with the adult world.

5. ...recorded an album, what kind of music would be on it?

My mother was extremely talented musically -- she had a beautiful singing voice and sang in her church choir and loved to play piano and organ (she was self-taught). My father didn't play an instrument, nor could he sing like my mother, but he had a decent voice for singing popular songs (ones from the first half of the 20th century, that is). Musical talent skipped a generation -- Jill has played recorder, drums, and guitar. Jeremy has done guitar and electric keyboard. I have no musical talent whatsoever. My singing is so bad that even I can recognize how bad it is. When I was 14 and 15 I played trombone very badly and hated every minute of it and was greatly relieved when the band director in high school suggested that both the band and I would be better off if I had an extra study hall three days a week. In other words.... are you kidding? Me? Sing or play an instrument? I don't think so. Maybe I could be the producer or something?
