Happy Mother's Day!
Mom
What makes you so special not just this day but all of the others too?
Maybe it was the little red tricycle that I had, because my legs
were too short for a bigger one. It could be the countless hours
you spent brushing all of the tangles out of my hair. Or the pieces
of gum that you diligently removed from my hair so that I wouldn't
have a bald spot. Mismatched clothes you let me wear in public
just to satisfy my independence. Tantrums endured when clothes
itched and my sock was crumpled under my foot inside my shoe.
Birthday parties you planned knowing they would be canceled due
to snow. Time you wasted at McDonald's waiting for my special
order hamburger. Trips to the emergency room when we were sick or
hurt. Band Aids on non-existent "boo boos". Stray dogs I let in
the house. Meals prepared even though you were sick. Early morning
rides to swim practices or meets. Learning about and coaching
sports that I insisted on playing. Chaperoning dances that I had
to attend. Then not chaperoning dances when I thought you'd embarrass
me. Putting up with my friends that I knew you never liked. Not
calling the police when I stayed out passed my curfew. Letting me
run the streets at all hours of the night. Just joking and making
sure you were still reading. Standing in line with me in the below
freezing temperatures for hours to get concert tickets. Going without
a car on the weekends. Picking me up at the bus station every
Friday when I came home from college, knowing you wouldn't see me
all weekend. The serious talks. The arguments. Fights you let me
win, and those that you never backed down on. Helping me hang
wallpaper upside down in the baby's room. Holding my hand through
my first pregnancy and the birth of my first child. Babysitting all
four kids when I needed a break. Too many things to mention.
The reason you are so special everyday, is not so much the things
you've done, or do, but the love and care you put into all of them.
Whether they were joyous occasions or bad times, we always knew you
did what you did out of love.
I love you.
