KIRKINTILLOCH WAR MEMORIAL

by Alexander Fraser Gartshore

Updated 15th January 2003

I live in Waterside, Kirkintilloch, Scotland and served in the Royal Air Force from 1959 to 1967. My hobbies are collecting badges, genealogy and local history. As a member of the Kirkintilloch branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland, I have had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with veterans of almost every conflict in which British servicemen have been involved since 1914. I humbly dedicate this work to the men who gave their lives in WW1 and to all those heroes who continued to suffer and die from the effects of that awful war long after the last shot had been fired , and to their families, and friends. The information mainly concerns men who were born or had connections in or around Kirkintilloch. I hope my work will be of some help to people researching their family tree or for those interested in WW1. and will prevent these men from becoming just names on the panels of our War Memorial.
I would like to thank the staff of the William Patrick Memorial Library in Kirkintilloch, the Mitchell Library in Glasgow and the Kirkintilloch Herald newspaper for their help in making available the informatiion. Thanks also to Piper Duncan Blair of Kirkintilloch Pipe Band, and a special thank you Graham Gartshore without whom the construction of this home page would not have been possible.

TO THE WAR MEMORIAL LIST

IN FLANDERS FIELDS

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead, short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
