a song

(c) Silverleaf 1993

you can say that you love me
you can afford the words
you can afford a tender glance
to prove that it's so.
you set the prices and values
i only play by your rules
i can't afford what you say i must
but i belong to you

chorus:
what kind of games
were you playin' with my life?
you stole all my joy
and gave me all your strife.
big fish eatin' the little fish
someone's bound to go hungry.

you've been telling my all my life
it's got to be me
oh i know it's got to be me.

i have a love of my own now
he is the light in my life
but when i kiss him and close my eyes
you still demand your price.
they tell me you are in prison
i am the one who feels jailed
locked behind bars that you forged for me,
they never yet have failed.

(chorus)
i've be playing this long enough
to know it's got to be me
oh i know it's got to be me.

you are the fear in my shadows
you are the pain in my dreams
i know it's over but deep inside
a little girl still screams.
i'm fighting you for my freedom
you're fighting me for my soul
winning or losing the battle surely does
take its toll.

(chorus)

someday soon i promise you
it won't be me,
oh i swear it won't be me.
