Some spaces were sealed, unintentionally or not. They are like sunken rowboats at the bottom
of a lake of stone, or human flesh, or whatever a city is made of. Some of them are apartments
with windows looking at concrete and doors opening to greet bundles of cable. Others are ancient
subways flooded with cloudy water. The first inhabitants of the city lived in and traveled
through spaces such as these. Everything they anticipated with joy or dread now lives above these
unswinging chandeliers and dusty tables. The city is painted both in joyous golden translucence
and nightmare blue.
