Dragon Land

Original gameThis is a game by Reiner Knizia, one of the world's best game creators and probably the most prolific, too. Dragon Land is an excellent game, sometimes underestimated by German games fans, perhaps for the presence of dice and for being directed to a juvenile audience. But the mechanics minimizes the effect of the dice and there are enough tactical decisions to please adults.

In my version, I let out the "Tower of Fate", where the dice are tossed into. You will have to roll them over the table, the usual way.

Another difference is the eggs, which I managed to improvise with "stones" from plastic toy rings. The same rings served as the game's magic rings. You will also have to improvise your rings, but do not worry about the eggs, which I included with the other tokens. Those tokens were reconstructed, in a higher or lower degree, from pictures of the original tokens. Only the "minor dragons" went through bigger changes, because they had no usable picture and thus I preferred to re-draw them, altering their color to better distinguish them from the "king dragons". The round shape was changed to make the tokens easier to be cut out.

The player pawns shown on the back of some tokens were replaced by scanned pictures of the various races represented in the game (humans, elves, dwarves and wizards), so that they are not in conflict with the actual pawns you will have to find - the easiest way is to take them from other games. Each player uses pawns in a different shape, in three colors.

For the cover shields, I could reconstruct the dragon, but I had to draw the bricks. The shield in the dragon's hands was left blank for you to draw the shape of your pawns (one shape on each shield) - but that is not really necessary to the game, if the word "draw" scares you.

The board was completely remade, because I couldn't find any picture that I could, with few changes, make adequate to print. I allowed myself some artistic freedom, but the original layout was carefully followed.

Game Material

Tokens and eggs
Fold to join the front and back sides.
Cut off by the front side, as the back is slightly larger.

Board
Just put the halves together.

Cover shields
Print four times. Draw the pawns in the center, if you wish.
Fold following the dotted lines, to make them stand.

Dice
Paste the labels on 2 common 6-sided dice.
Be careful not to mix them up: each row is for 1 die.

To be improvised:

Gems57 gems: 9 colorless and 16 each in red, green and blue

Search in stores which sell material for costume jewelry. I could buy 1-centimeter plastic gems really cheap, all together for the equivalent to less than 1 dollar.

Pawns12 pawns: 4 different shapes, in the colors red, green and blue

I bought 4 really cheap sets of Pachisi and similar games, from different manufacturers.

Ring12 white magic rings

I bought toy rings at party stores. If you can't find them, just make them from string or anything you see fit, as long as they can be placed on the pawns and these don't pass through.

English rules can be obtained on the game's page at BoardgameGeek, in PDF format.
