the bare beginnings of A PAGE OF PEOPLE
I would give my bubble castle and gothic skydancer doll to have over for
ice cream and grannysmith apples (for the moment limited to famous types
with web sites.) I admire people who press the acceptable limits by being
true to their work ("shock me, shock me with that deviant behavior"
does not count.) These are very short blurbs on artists I've studied and
loved, if you would like to discuss or know more email me. Oh, and check
out my conspiracy theory!
Tori
Amos IS my favorite musician. If I lose goth points, bite me. I started
listening to Tori when "Little Earthquakes" came out, when I
was in junior high, and I have continued to be impressed with her work
since then (especially the off album stuff.) She's exceptionally talented,
and brave and she believes in fae. Her music got me through more shit than
I care to relate and her R.A.I.N.N. work is at least another shimmer.
Neil
Gaiman channels some really incredible stories, tells them for us quite
nicely, takes rather good care of a dear friend of mine who insists he
is really a gryphon, and was very nice when I got nervous and almost dropped
my book on him. "The Kindly Ones," "Brief Lives" and
"Babycakes" are my favorites this afternoon. I shall send disembodied
affections and anonymous glitterdust his way until he decides to be my
friend.
Nausicaa
was my hero when I was a little girl. She probably still is. I believe
the English dubbed version is called "Warriors of the Wind,"
the subtitled one I have is "Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind."
Go. Find an anime video store, beg them to find it for you. The story and
that baby omu song (la-la-lalala-la-la) have haunted me for so long I thought
it was a dream until I was seventeen.
David
Lynch , what can I say? My favorite of his works is still "Twin
Peaks: Fire Walk With Me," but "Industrial Symphony No. 1"
is a close second (the parts when they drop Julee. and when the baby doll
bombs fall.) I've yet to see something entirely disappointing, I even liked
his final "fuck you for canceling me" episode of Twin Peaks the
series. AND (whisperwhisperhushhush) I hear he may be exploring a project
with Mr. Neil sometime in the near future...
Joyce
Carol Oates is an excellent, and ridiculously prolific, writer. I'm
fascinated by her stories, she writes "dark" "gothic"
fiction (and lots of other things, including PLAYS) exceptionally well,
even noncheesy ghost stories. The first thing I read of hers was "Zombie"
and I read it in a tree in Rotary Park and was too creeped out to climb
the thirty feet down until some little kids saw me and started screaming.
She also reminds me of a beaky little twitchy bird in person.
Kathy
Acker is one of the ballsiest writer I've come across. I may not always
enjoy her work but I'm always interested by it and sometimes I can't get
enough. The short stories are easiest because keeping track of he characters
is hard. I sincerely wish I had been able to take the course she taught
at my school last semester.
Diamanda
Galas , if you haven't heard her you haven't heard anything like her.
I think she channels demons. I think Schrei X is some of the most terrifying
shit I've ever heard. I had no idea a human voice could do these things.
I did a twenty minute report on moirology and Greek mourning traditions
concluding with playing three of her songs and my Tisch performance class
walked out.
Karen
Finley is the person I would most like to see in performance. I saw
her art exhibit (yeah, with the pornographic Winnie the Pooh stuff) and
was interested, but after reading articles, descriptions, quotes and monologues
I want to experience just what the NEA hates.
*Conspiracy Theory*
I just think it is quite odd that there are so many connections between
these people:
Everyone knows Neil and Tori are friends, and mention each other in their
work (the Tori poster on Rose's wall in "The Kindly Ones," "Tear
in Your Hand" playing in the fetish club in "Brief Lives,"
and the Neil lines on each Tori album for blatant examples.)
Kathy Acker is also friends with Neil and has been (along with Tori) been
called an influence on Delirium's character, AND she has a scene with Diamanda
Galas in "Pussy, King of the Pirates." Neil also recently got
a phone call from David Lynch to work together. Um, and I've met Tori,
Neil, Kathy, and Joyce Carol Oates: how's that for creepy!
Okay, well maybe it's just a Neil thing. It's the secret society of
people who know Neil. I had more people on this list to begin with and
more connections so maybe when I finish this my theory will be more stunning.
Someday however *I* will be the one THEY want to go to the movies with!
Unfortunately, I may have to get famous before they notice. ;<
