Chava Alberstein is one of the most talented and prolific artists in Israel. She also has one of the longest careers.Chava started singing in the 60's and soon became very popular thanks to many great songs that have become part of the Israeli musical heritage. It is almost impossible to classify Chava, because she is extremely versatile and uses so many different musical styles and trends. She is totally comfortable singing Yiddish, pop, folk, rock or even rap(!!!, although that's not her best work). For a long time, she would only sing and play the guitar, but then she successfully started writing her own lyrics and music. Her fabulous voice and her strong artistic abilities allow her to sing everything. I saw her in concert, and I can tell you that she is genuinely wonderful. She came on stage with her guitar and sang for almost two hours. Her technique was flawless and her voice as good as in her records. And such charisma!!! Chava Alberstein evolved with her time, and this fact is reflected in her discography. The 60's are pretty folk and Yiddish, the 70's more pop and the 80's more rock. Still, overall, the only constant was the quality of her recordings. You will find here all her albums that are available on CD. Let's note that Chava has stayed with the same recording company (CBS - which became NMC in Israel) from the very beginning, and that is really rare, especially in Israel where many singers do not hesitate to switch from one label to another. I like Chava Alberstein very much, but I am not enraptured by every single of her albums. As I said, Chava is very prolific, and consequently, there are gems in her albums, but also some forgettable tunes...There is only one sure thing though, and that is that you are bound to love at least SOMETHING , because whatever your musical tastes are, Chava sang it! |
DOVE OF LOVE. NMC. One of her very best albums ever. Among my favorite albums of Chava Alberstein! Highly recommended!
Improvised Love. NMC. A wonderful album! Great songs. Highly recommended!
FIRST COLLECTION. NMC. An excellent compilation of greatest songs of Chava Alberstein. Highly recommended!
SECOND COMPILATION. NMC. Maybe the most beautiful compilation of Chava Alberstein's songs available. She even recorded three new songs for this collection. I can listen to this over and over. Highly recommended!
THIRD COMPILATION. NMC. The newest compilation (1997). Another fantastic collection. You can see that Chava Alberstein has a lot of respect for her public since she recorder a few special songs for this third volume. Highly recommended!
THE YIDDISH ALBUM. NMC. Among the very best Yiddish albums that I have ever heard. The choice of the songs as well as the arrangements are simply fantastic. Highly recommended!
LIVE. NMC. Where you can see that Chava Alberstein is truly talented, no matter what the recording technologies are. Great!
THE MAN I LOVE. NMC. This is an album in English of songs that Chava likes. The songs are mostly jazzy and standards. She sings Billie Holiday as well as the Beatles. Although her English accent is not the best, I really love the atmosphere and the arrangements (very sophisticated) of this album.
LIKE A WILDOFLOWER. NMC. One of the most successful (if not most successful) album of Chava Alberstein. Contains a lot of hits, and the whole album is genuinely beautiful. Highly recommended!
LONDON. NMC. A huge success in Israel. Very pop-light rock. Except for two really great songs, I am not too keen on this album. I did not like the sound or the concept of it.
MARGARITA. NMC. Another Yiddish compilation that was reissued in 1994. This compilation includes older recordings of Chava. It compliments the first Yiddish album (see above), but if you need to choose, get the first one and not this one.
MY OWN WAY. NMC. To me, I think that this is maybe Chava Alberstein's worst album. Poor melodies, terrible wanna-be- hip arrangements and worst...bad taste!!!
AT HOME. NMC. Good album. Contains some great songs. For those who want to know more about Chava.
IF YOU COULD SEE ME NOW. NMC. This is an album of Nachum Heyman's songs that should have been a hundred times better!!! I was very disappointed by the quality of the recording and the inconsistence of the songs and the uncomfort of the voice...
VOICES. NMC. Another good album reissued in 1994. Pop and very successful in Israel.
WORDS AND SILENCE. NMC. This album, reissued on CD in 1994 also contains 4 songs from another great album, EMIGRANTS. This CD is a very good disc.
STARDUST. NMC. The first time I heard this album (at the time on vinyl), I was not too enthralled by it. When I listened to it again, I found a few songs that were not bad at all.
THE SKIES ARE CLEARING UP. NMC. I don't like this album, because I find it boring. Very folk-pop of the 70's. |
