Joanna Curtis JBCurtis@aol.com ------------------------------------------ With so many Jesse Davis, it gets darn confusing, not only for the Davis but for others who intermarried. I can't remember how many Jesse's I have in file. The Jesse that married Milton was a whole different person/place and time than the one that married Mason. (Fountis is from Fountaine family - my Mom's family) Myrtle Joy Davison Sat, 19 Sep 1998 Surnames: DAVIS, MASON Searching for parents of Robert S. Davis b. 1 June 1784 Fauquier Co, VA; moved with his parents to NELSON CO, KY at age 19; m. 22 Dec 1810 to LUCINDA, d. of John Mason of NELSON CO, KY; he d. 7 Nov 1850 Keytesville, Chariton Co, MO; she d. same place 7 Dec 1833 aged 39. Lucinda mentioned in nuncupative will of John Mason 23 Dec 1813, recorded 21 Feb 1814 (Nelson Co Ky Will Book Cm 1811-1817, p. 181).Three Davises located in The Nelson Co. Pioneer: Henry with property sold in Prince Wm Co, Va 1801; William, same also in 1801; John in town of Bloomfield and also with William witnesses(?) to will 2/1810. Which is Robert's father? OOr none? Mr. Davis: I have posted, on the Nelson Co, KY website, what little information I have about our Davis-Mason relatives - and I'm not sure that your NANCY and my LUCINDA were sisters. For background: my paternal gggrandfather was Henry Holman Davis, youngest son (and possibly child) of ROBERT S. DAVIS and LUCINDA MASON. Robert and Lucinda were both buried in the Old Keytesville Cemetary, Keytesville, Chariton Co., MO, and I have seen both tombstones. His says "d. 7 Nov 1850 age 67y'; hers, "d. Dec 7. 1833 age-39T Consort of Robert S." Per a vanity history of Chariton County of 1883, while both Sheriff HENRY HOLMAN DAVIS and his older brother, the 2nd son and 3rd child, Judge JOHN MASON DAVIS, were still living. The Judge's biographical notation says that Robert Davis was born in Fauquier Co, VA on 1 Jun 1784 and moved with his parents to Nelson Co, KY when he was 19 (or 1803)/ On 22 Dec 1810 he m. LUCINDA MASON, and on 29 NOv 1811, thier first son WILLIAM HARRISON DAVIS was born. Per Elisabeth Tooley (a granddaughter of HHD), the other children were Ruth, Eliza, and Catherine. There was also a Burgess, and I don't know where he fits yet. When WHD was 9, the family migrated to Missouri, specifically Old Chariton where at least the youngest HHD was born in 1822. My gggrandmother was the oldest daughter of HENRY HOLMAN DAVIS and ANN ELISABETH CRAWLEY, daughter of JONATHAN CRAWLEY (one of founders and surveyors of Fayette Mo and from VA) and ELISABETH RICHERSON MORGAN. Their older daughter, JANE EMELINE, married first WILLIAM HARRISON DAVIS - who was the first atty and county atty iin Chariton Co and d. 1845. My dad used to say that those 'Davis men were real moneymakers". As you'll see from my notes on the webpage, JOHN MASON's will shows his wife to be RUTH, and his other daughter, NANCY DUNCAN. As family word-of-mouth tells me that one of the RSD daughters was Ruth - which would be his wife's mother, and the 2nd son was John Mason after the child's maternal grandfather. If they did follow naming patterns, then we can guess Robert's father was William because his first son was too. Maybe, however, it was hero worship. The only reference, for example, to any HOLMAN, was an early pioneer doctor in Old Chariton. Also, none of the children of JOHN MASON DAVIS or HENRY HOLMAN DAVIS, have any of the names you note: David, Jesse. In the VA tax records of 1787, there were these Davises: Judith, Mathew, Richard, John (with Richard), Aquila, Thomas, James, Eli, John again, Hugh, and Joseph. The 1810 Nelson Co census lists Robert as a hed of household - age 26-45. Others are Simon, 2 Thomases, 4 Johns - and one who is possibly the man we want - 2 James, Mathew, Joseph, and Henry - all in the same area as Robert. We also hhave a John Davis as witness for a pensioners petition in the town of Bloomfield Nelson Co, section 7, but no further detail of which John Davis. It will take great digging to ferret out which of the Davis clans we each belong to, and at the moment I'm trying to get all my mother's well-documented New England lines back to the water. Consequently, my dad's lines have taken a backseat: too common names (like Mason, Davis, Morgan) to be easy also. Do track down those contacts who came to me via the internet, especially CNuffer - I think she's in Indiana too. Good luck, and keep me posted on any progress you make - as will I too. Norma Karter nckarter@flash.net writes: Jesse Gross Davis Sr. was born in Nelson Co., KY Oct 31, 1792. Jesse died March 14, 1860 Pike County IN, at 67 years of age. His body was interred in Spurgeon, Pike Co., IN, Davis Cemetery. He married Nancy Mason in Elizabethtown, Hardin Co., KY, Dec 21, 1815. Nancy was born in Kentucky Jan 6, 1795. Nancy was the daughter of John Mason and Hannah Hutcheson. Nancy died Jan 9, 1896 Pike County IN, at 101 years of age. Her body was interred in Spurgeon, Pike Co., IN, Davis Cemetery. Consent for the marriage of Nancy and Jesse was granted by her mother on December 19, 1815. Her mother's name was listed as Hannah Mayson. Just after her daughter Tacy died, Nancy left land in a deed conveyance in October 1874, to her grandchildren by Jesse Clifford. Obit: Pike County Democrat, Friday, Jan 17, 1896 Nancy Davis, the oldest person in this section of the country, died at the residence of James Black last Sunday. She was one hundred and one years old and was drawing a pension as surviving widow of the war of 1812. She was a sister to William and David Mason, Sr., who died a short time ago. Jesse fought in the War of 1812 in John Farmer's Kentucky Militia. On September 28, 1850 the government passed an act awarding 80 acres of land as bounty for any survivors of the War of 1812. On March 3, 1855 they passed another act allowing those same veterans an additional 80 acres of land. Jesse was awarded 80 acres of land on bounty land warrant 6274 and another 80 acres of land on bounty land warrant 46179. On March 9, 1878 the government passed an act allowing widow's of veterans of the War of 1812 to file for a pension. In his pension file, on April 24, 1855, Jesse stated that he was 63 years old and a resident of Pike Co IN. That he had served for the term of six months (Nov 27, 1814 to May 10, 1815) in the war of 1812 against Great Britain, that he had received bounty land of 80 acres and had legally disposed of it. He was applying for his second 80 acres. In 1878, Nancy filed for a widow's pension. She states that her husband at the time of his enlistment at age 23 was a farmer about six feet, black hair, hazel eyes and had dark complexion. She states that he was born in Nelson County KY and that they were married in Elizabethtown, Hardin Co., KY by Martin Utterback a Baptist minister. She states that her maiden name was Mason. >From the date of their marriage to October 1819 they resided in Bardstown, KY (Nelson Co) when they moved to Gibson Co., IN where they remained about 20 years and then moved to Pike Co., IN where they lived until the death of her husband and where she still resided. In the Tax lists for Hardin Co, KY Jesse is not listed in 1814. He is listed in 1815 as owning one horse/mule worth $30. He is not listed in 1816 or any year after. According to Nancy's pension affadavit, they were in Nelson Co, KY right after their marriage. There is a Jesse Davis that purchased land Aug 28, 1818 in Gibson County IN. He also purchased land on Sept 11, 1821, January 11,1834 and March 30, 1836 in Gibson Co IN. Buying land in the same parcel was Robert Clark Davis (Nov 14, 1818), Joel Davis (Sept 30, 1835) and William Ross Davis (Dec 12, 1834). It's possible that Jesse was related to these Davis's. There is a Robert Davis listed in the 1815 Hardin Co KY tax list. Jesse is listed in the 1820 and 1830 Gibson County IN census. There is a Robert C. Davis, William R Davis and David Davis listed also. In the parcel next to one above, John Davis purchased land May 13, 1833 and July 31, 1836. While living in Gibson County Jesse purchased land in Pike Co. IN on March 29, 1837. He is listed in the 1840 census in Pike Co. Jesse also purchased land in Pike County on Nov 25, 1848, July 14, 1849, Sept 21, 1850, and June 5, 1851 (used his Military Land Warrant). In the same section of land his sons John J. and David J. also purchased land. Based on the number of children listed in the 1840 census we have added those missing to our list. In the 1850 census Jesse and family are in Pike Co IN in Monroe township. Their grandchildren Lydia and Josiah Davis (children of David Jackson Davis and wife Lydia ?) are living with them. We know these are not Jesse's children because he states that his daughter Tasey Lewis Davis born in 1842 is his youngest daughter. After Jesse's son David's wife Lydia died he had remarried so we assume that his mother took his two youngest children to raise. In 1860 Nancy is living alone with her children still in Monroe township after Jesse's death. In 1870, Nancy is living with her daughter Tacy Clifford and her family still in Monroe township. Jesse left a will dated Dec 21, 1855 in Pike County, IN. He only bequeathed land and/or goods to his wife, his 4 youngest children and one granddaughter. He named his son David Jackson Davis as executor. His older children may not have needed support or he may have already settled land or money on them at an earlier date. In 1860 the disposition of items was made based on Jesse's will. He left beds to two of his daughters, his wife and his granddaughter. The value of his estate was approximately $3500.00. In Sept 1881, an heirship deed conveying land to Jesse Clifford was filed in Pike County, IN . All of Jesse's children are listed: David J., John J., Jesse G., Benoni S., Candis, Hannah Ritter, Nancy L., Sarah and Mary Ann. Jesse Goss Davis Sr. and Nancy Mason had the following children: 2 i. Wilson Davis. 3 ii. David Jackson Davis was born 1817. 4 iii. John James Davis was born Nov 22, 1818 and died Sept 5, 1898. 5 iv. Jesse Goss Davis Jr. was born 1823 and died bef 1881. 6 v. Daughter Davis was born 1825-1830. 7 vi. Sarah Davis was born Feb 11, 1827 and died June 3, 1896. 8 vii. Hannah Riter Davis was born 1829. 9 viii. Mary Ann Davis was born 1831 and died 1915. 10 ix. Candus Davis was born January 7, 1832. 11 x. Benona L. Davis was born 1835. 12 xi. Nancy Serina Davis was born in Indiana Nov 26, 1837. Nancy died July 2, 1925 at 87 years of age. 13 xii. Elizabeth Davis was born in Indiana 1840. Elizabeth died bef 1881. 14 xiii. Tasey Lewis Davis was born December 14, 1842 and died April 4, 1874.
