William the Conqueror not only brought feudalism to his new kingdom. He
also invited various religious communities to establish themselves in
Britain. Cistercians, Benedictines, Premonstratensians, Carthusians, and
other monastic groups made their way across the English Channel and built
beautiful abbeys and priories, many of which are now in ruin. In many
ways, however, the leaders of the various orders had much the same power
as the lords of the realm. And, with that power came wealth and the
ability to build palaces.
Among the most powerful clerics in the medieval realm were the Bishops of
St. David's. These men supplanted the native Welsh religious sects in the
early 12th century and ruled the See of St. David's in support of the
Norman king. Owning vast estates, they lived in grandeur comparable to
that of their secular counterparts. Great bishops palaces were erected in
St. David's, Lamphey, and Llawhaden. They also owned "inns", or great
houses, in London and in Ludlow, where the Council of Wales and the
Marches took place. Minor residences also existed in Llanddewi,
Llandygwydd, New Moat, Trefin, and Wolfscastle. While none of the smaller
houses has survived, the three great palaces remain in splendid ruin,
currently under the care of CADW: Welsh Historic Monuments.
Men with great power often needed a sturdy residence to defend
themselves.

The Bishops of St. David's were no exceptions. In many ways, a bishop's
palace was his castle. Like a castle, the palace contained quarters for
a garrison and servants, a domestic wing with the hall, kitchen and
service rooms, and the bishop's luxurious private apartments. Oftentimes,
the structure was fortified with battlements, an encircling curtain wall
or deep moat, and a gatehouse. Generally however, the palaces were not
as heavily fortified as a real castle. Only one of the three palaces
of the Bishops of St. David's resembled a true castle. That castle
still towers high above the valleys of Pembrokeshire. That castle is Llawhaden.

Llawhaden Castle is located about 8 miles east of Haverfordwest,
just off the A40. Bounded by hedgerows, the narrow approach road
into Llawhaden gives no hint that the great bishops once took
refuge here. Even the village itself, quiet and rather secluded,
hides the splendor of its medieval past. The bishop's castle
takes a little effort to locate, but the short stroll from the
car park is a nice surprise, lined with pretty flowers and charming
homes. The name of the village and its castle, Llawhaden, apparently
derives from Llanhuadain or Llanaedan, "the Church of St. Aidan"
(which still stands to the east of the castle).
Most likely, Llawhaden began as an earth and timber castle
in the 12th century, the prize of the Norman Bishop Bernard.
Over time, Llawhaden underwent several alterations as different
bishops left their mark. Like many castles, this one sat high
atop a hill. Like many castles, a deep ditch and earthen
embankment formed the earliest outer defenses. They still
give the castle a sense of power. And, like many earth and
timber castles, the defenses were refortified with stone,
in this case, in response to a siege led by the Welshman,
the Lord Rhys, in the late 12th century.
In the 13th century, Bishop Thomas Bek (1280-93) made
arguably the greatest impact at Llawhaden, when he
established and expanded the village. Bek's work at
the castle includes the complex hall block, with
its kitchen and service rooms (buttery and pantry)
and stone-vaulted undercrofts, and the bishop's
elaborately adorned chambers above (complete with latrines!).
Today, this sector of the castle is largely ruined, but
still radiates the prestige of its occupant.

During the next century, the bishops added the twin-towered gatehouse,
the most impressive structure at Llawhaden Castle. Looming directly
over the dry ditch, its foreboding face would have intimidated anyone
seeking entry. Although the exterior has been well preserved, the
interior of the gatehouse is now disappointingly decayed.
At the same time, a fine range of domestic buildings was added on
the southern side of the castle. Some rooms served as apartments
and contained fireplaces and private latrines. At the eastern
sat the chapel, which still contains lovely arched windows, a
cruciform ceiling, and plasterwork. The chapel tower next to
the chapel was even more elaborate, with a fireplace, a latrine,
vaulted rooms, and access to the battlements. Ironically, the
dungeon was located In the basement of the chapel tower.

The most distinguishing feature of this wing is a five-storied tower-porch,
which can still be climbed and towers high above the other structures
inside the castle. Clearly, this unique structure not only functioned
as an observation tower, but also announced (albeit silently!) the
bishop's superior status.
After the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century, the
roles of the Bishops of St. David's changed dramatically. Their
palaces in West Wales fell into ruin and they abandoned their
great castle at Llawhaden. Later, Llawhaden Castle became a
quarry for local building material, degrading the structure
even farther.
Imposing Llawhaden Castle sits aloof yet intimately connected
to the nearby village. The neighboring countryside, so typically
Welsh, is a resplendent and undulating green, painted with rugged
patches of trees and velvety pasturelands. The grey stone castle
is a haunting contrast to its vivid surroundings, recalling the
eventful history and splendor of the Bishops of St. David's.

This Davis family covers a period of about two hundred and ninety years.
This is a remarkable record when you consider that Hezekial Davis
stated he was born in WInston-Salem near Moravian Town in North
Carolina and his father had a bible and could write,
because he said, "he copied the record from his father's bible record."
We have consistently followed the names of Harmon, Eliphas
(Eli), Abagah, Jepthi, Jesse, John, Reason and Vann.
These names appear to be bible names and show a deep
religious feeling among this Davis family.

Harry Alexander Davis, pub 1927, Wash DC.[sdw 8/5/1998] Morgan Davis ba
1622-3 Lantwidvoyrde, Glamorgan, Wales. He was a witness to a lease of
lands from Rees Williams to his father in Carmarthen Co., dated 8 July 1673.
Morgan married Catherine late in life, settled Lithrens Castle,
Pembrokeshire. (Circumstances indicate the he was closely related to Wm and
Francis Howell, who came to Penn. It is not known if thru his mother or his
wife.) From the dates of the births of his last three children which are
recorded in Merion Meeting Records (MSS Hist. Soc. Penn.) he had at least
one son born in Wales, i.e., John. He came into the Province of
Pennsylvania prior to 1586, probably on ship "Vine" which arrived 17 7
mo,1684 bringing many Welsh families to settle in Merion, Haverford, and
Radnor. (Welsh Settlmt Penn., Browning, p 505) Morgan David owned by a
triparty deed dated 19. 6 mo 1686, and signed by Richard Davies, Morgan
David, and William Howell, a parcel of land, 100 acres, in Merion Township.
Land deeds of the Haverford School and College show that the College land
was originally part of the 410 ac which Richard Davies conveyed 19 6 mo 1686
to Thos. Ellis, Gent.; Morgan David, Husbandman; and Francis Lloyd ,
Shoemaker. (Welsh, Settlmt of Penn., Browning, pp 202-227) He was a
Freeholder and owned 354 ac of land. (Welsh Founders of Penn.,, Glenn Vol.
i, p.157)
Morgan and Catherine David witnessed the marriage of Thomas Pascale 15 9 mo
1692. They were witnesses to the marriage of Thomas Rees, o Haverford and
Rebecca Williams 11 4 mo 1692. Morgan was a witness to the marriage of
Lewis Waker, of Philadelphia, late of Merion and Mary Moris, of the same
place, 22 2 mo 1693. (MSS Hist Soc PA)
Morgan David dated his will 1512 mo 1694-5. He was buried 17 12 mo 1694=5.
This will was probated by his widow, Catherine who was sole executrix, 18 7
mo 1695. (Welst Settlmt PA, Browning, p 245 Gen Soc PA vol ii p 31) His
estate to go to his eldest sons, John and Evan; he mentions son David, and
leaves legacies to dtrs Catherine and Elisabeth, and to the Meeting House at
Haverford. He mentions property called "Chestnut-well" and "Beech-well".
William Howell, Morris Llewellyn, Francis Howell, and Dvid Lawrence are
named overseers. Wtinesses to this will were Robert Owen, Robert Powell,
and John Humphreys.
One hundre ac of land mentioned in the triparty deed was conveyed by the
relict and the overseers to James Thomas by deed 8 3 mo 1695. James Thomas
immediately reconveyed the same to his son, James Thomas.

John David, son of Morgan (1) David. Born Pembrokeshire, Wales 168_. He
came to Penn. with his parents when a small child and about 1684. He was a
witness to his mother's second marriage3 11 mo 1697. He married about 1699,
Ann, dtr of Thomas Thomas, and young widow of David Evan, born Wales 1683.
John and Ann were witnesses to marriages in Haverford 4 11 mo 1706 and 11 3
mo 1715. He removed to Pencader Hundred New Castle county, Delaware about
June 1716 and is shown in the list of signers of the Confession of 4 Feb.
1716-17 as "Shion Dafydd". [Pencader Rec p21) In May 1717 he was a joint
purchaser with his brother David of 400 ac of land from William Davis and
David Evans, part of a 30,000 acre grant to said Davs and Evans from Wm Penn
in 1701. (Deeds, Lib Q1 fol 81) He was deeded land in Pencader Hundred by
William Curston, executor for the estate of Edw Gray, to said Gray from
William Davis of Radnor PA and Dvid Evans of Pencader Hundred. (Deeds, Lib.
G1, fol 167) In 1727 he was deeded a parcel of land by John Thomas.
(Deeds, Lib H1 fol 189) In 1729 he was deeded a parcel of land by Griffith
John (Deeds, Lib 11 fol 124) On 30 Apr 1736 he was deeded by William
Cureton and Susannah his wife, 139 ac mor or less, of land in St Georges
Hundred, Del. (Deeds, Lib Off, fol 109.) In May 1743 John and David divided
their land giving each other a release of claim, etc.* John and Ann his
wife could not write as they signed this deed with a mark. This deed was
proven in court in May 1748. The release of David and Martha his wife, to
John David was never recorded. The following abstract of a deed is of
interest: John Hopkins and Rachel hise wife, of Pencader Hundred, convey 20
Jan 1767 to David Davis, Cordwainer 26 ac of land, part of 400 ac deeded to
John and David Davis, joint partners (1717), and they the said John and
David David divided the same, in two equal shares between them and gave
release to each other for every one his share, dated 16 May 1743; and the
said 26 ac is part of said John Davis, his share. The said John David in
his last will and testament dated 22 Mar 1763 did bequeath, give, and devise
all his said lands unto the above John Hopkins and Rachel, his wife, etc...
by right of said will, the said John Hopkins and Rachel his wife converys
said 26 ac of land to the above named David Davis. (Deeds, Lib. Y1, fol
127). [The spelling of the surname David and Davis is just as it is in the
book] swd 8/98. This will has not been discovered, nor is there any record
of administration of estates of John or Ann David. Date of teh death of
John was about 1764-5, it is recorded in the church register but no date is
given. (Pencader Rec., p 70) Date of the death of Ann is not know tho she
was evidently deceased prior to 22 Mar 1763.

Ann Davies nor their Heirs no any other person or persons for them or any of
them or in their or either of their names or the Name right or Stead of any
of them shall or will by any Way or means hereafter have Claim Chalenge or
demand an Estate right Title or Interest of in or to the Said Land and
Premises or any part or parcel thereof, but from all & every Action Right
Estate Title Interest Demand of in or to the Premises or any part or parcel
there of they and every of them shall be utterly excluded and barred forever
by these Presents. And also the said John Davies and Ann Davies and their

Catherine David was a witness for the defendant, 5 4 mo 1688 in the case of
Henry James vs James Brown, , Defend. "Catherine Davis being attested in
Oppen Court, declareth for ye Defend that she did hear Henry James order
James Brown ye Pipe and Ye Tymber att Rackcoone Creeke." (Rec of Cts
Chester Co., PA 1681-98, fol 126)
Catherine, widow, married (2) Evan Harry, of Merion, 3 11 mo 1697; this was
witnessed by John Evan and a Robert David (MSS Hist. Soc. Pa) Evan Harry
owned 164 ac of land in Radnor in December 1701, and 204 ac in Merion in Apr
1704. He died 1718-19. Catherine, his widow, removed to Pencader Hundred,
New Castle, Co., Del. She shown as joining in 1720 subscribing as "Catoring
Evan Harry." (Pencader Rec. p 22) The estate of Evan Harry was not
administered and settled until 19 Feb 1723. (Gen Soc Pa., vol vii p 284;
ct. rec. also)
Catherine maried (3) James Thomas. She was a widow again at the time of
death 25 May 1741. (Pencader Rec., p 68)
Also, I find that, at times, it's wise to keep track of those families of "like surnames"
(even if you are aware that they are NOT "your" ancestors).
Through the process of elimination of those you can prove
NOT to be your ancestors...well, sometimes it helps to prove just who was...
Sound confusing? Well, some of us on this Fayette County List are from old Owen DAVIS.
There were TWO Owen DAVISES that frequently are confused with one another:
1. "Our" Owen DAVIS, born 5 December, 1725, and died 7 July, 1810.
Buried at Rubles Mill on Georges Creek, Fayette County, Pa.
Married to (1) Sarah OWENS, a dau of Samuel and Sarah OWENS,
and (2) Hannah JAMES a dau of Messech and Mary JAMES. Had children:

b. Samuel DAVIS, born 15 May, 1753-died 6 April, 1826.
c. Mary Elizabeth DAVIS, born 10 April, 1755.
d. Sarah DAVIS, born 7 May, 1757-died 11 November, 1798.
e. Jane DAVIS, born 28 October, 1760-died before 1803.
f. Elizabeth DAVIS, born 15 February, 1764-died before 1803.
g. Meshach DAVIS, born 4 September, 1765-died 11 October, 1845.
h. Evan DAVIS, born 11 July, 1767-died before 1803.
i. Ruth DAVIS, born 23 August, 1769.
j. Enoch DAVIS, born in February, 1772.
k. Hannah DAVIS, born in September, 1774.
l. Susanna DAVIS, born 17 July, 1776.
m. John DAVIS, born 16 March, 1779-died 6 January, 1820.
n. Lewis DAVIS, born 8 July, 1782-died 12 November, 1782.
o. Isaac DAVIS, born 25 August, 1783-died 2 August, 1854.

q. Anna DAVIS, born 5 March, 1790.
Recent information on "the other Owen DAVIS,
who married to Anna Maria WEBER", comes from the baptism records
of the First Trinity Lutheran Church of New Holland, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
The children of Thomas DAVIS were:
a. Owen DAVIS, born 2 April, 1734, Baptized 1735.
SEE! The other Owen DAVIS!!! This is NOT the Fayette County Owen...
b. Maria DAVIS, born 18 July, 1735, Baptized 1735.
c. Hannah DAVIS, Baptized 1 June, 1740.
d. Johannes George DAVIS, Baptized 1 June, 1740.

New Holland is the population center of Earl Township, Lancaster County, Pa.
Thomas DAVIS was a son of John DAVIS.
Thomas DAVIS later is Captain Thomas DAVIS, Revolutionary War,
from the Little Cove area of Franklin/Bedford Counties, Pa.
(This was at one time that southwestern part of Cumberland County, Pa.)
This is near Fort Loudon...
This particular DAVIS family was originally from Cardigan County, Wales.
2. The "OTHER" Owen DAVIS, born 2 April, 1734, and died on or about 3 June, 1806, in harrison County, (West) Virginia. Married to Anna Maria WEBER in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, on 27 April, 1762. Had children:
a. John DAVIS, born about 1763, still living in 1806. (Morgantown, Va.)
b. Henry DAVIS, born about 1764, still living in 1806.
c. Sarah DAVIS, born about 1765.
d. Jacob DAVIS, born 4 July, 1766, died 28 February, 1847.
e. Marymadelane DAVIS, born about 1767, still living in 1805, as she married her second husband, George THOMAS, in harrison County (West), Va., on 12 March, 1805.
f. Philip DAVIS, born about 1769.
g. Notley DAVIS, born 21 January, 1775, still living in 1806.
h. Mary DAVIS, born about 1778.
i. Elizabeth DAVIS, born about 1782, still living in 1803.
By trying to keep these DAVISES separated maybe
we will get a clearer picture of whom was whom...What do you think?
