Access to Information Tools:

General Research, Writer's Toolshop, & Consumer Goodies

General Research

Search engines, directories, & subject guides

  • The University of Arizona's Sabio Web Search
My favorite launching pad to access Yahoo, Alta Vista, and many other useful search and meta-search engines (especially Dogpile) and web instructional guides -- all in one elegantly simple location. An essential bookmarker.
  • Dogpile
The most important research tool on the Internet for me, since it searches over a dozen engines simultaneously, and it can search Usenet postings as well as the web. For optimum results, try the term you seek in lowercase, with parentheses around the exact phrase and an "AND" between terms for boolean searches, i.e. "mark twain" AND "a connecticut yankee" helps you zoom in on exactly what you need.
  • Resources From the Internet
My former instructor Prof. Tom Goldpaugh of Marist College, Poughkeepsie, New York, offers these terrific navigation guides for search machines, meta-indexes, literature indexes, and humanities gateways.

    Internet Portals

These big dogs wants their home pages to be the starting point for our Internet experience. The purpose of Bridge to the Net is to help people become self-empowered cyber-navigators, so if these "portals" help in that endeavor, great. If not, forget 'em and learn to chart your own course.
