COLLECTED STORIES

Here is a collection of the stories I have written throughout fiction writing classes and since then.  Enjoy.

Faigan's Dream

This is a tale of two seamen stuck in a leaky dinghy after a shipwreck.  It is the first major story I ever wrote and the one that recieved the most acclaim from teachers.  It's been through numerous drafts - far more drafts than any of my other stories.  8 pages

Thought I'd put the first draft of Faigan's Dream on here just to show how much it has evolved.   It started out quite a different story - much more plot driven.  I remember the students in the workshop not knowing what the hell was going on.

To Live in a Hole in the Ground

Rabbit and man trade places. People will unfortunately most likely read this one first since it's such a quick read.  I think it's fun for how ridiculous and unserious it is.  The Teaching Assistant (TA), however, ripped the hell out of it.  I loved his ending comment which went: "You write well enough, but now it's a question of finding a story worth telling." Oh well.  Its still worth checking out I guess.  3 pages

An Offer from Hades

An obituary writer struggles over where to go when he dies.  This got trashed a good deal in the workshop for the number of cliches found throughout.  Looking back on it now, I can't believe I didn't notice them.  6 pages

From Mogadore to Leighring

The travels and adventures of a band of angst-driven neo-gypsies in a future wasteland setting.  Warning: A number of bad words and disgusting images.  12 pages

Shem

A boy who is sick and tired of being kept in the dark about things takes action.  This story went over quite well in the workshop.  It is my attempt at emulating the style of one of my favorite writers, William Faulkner.  A Rose For Emily is the only story of his available on the net because of copyright laws.  It isn't one of my favorites, but most of Faulkner's stories are good so its worth checking out.  12 pages

This story is now in BOOK FORMAT!  This means that instead of being presented in the stupid way that HTML puts it into (i.e. no indented paragraphs and spaces between every paragraph), I fixed it up so that it's normal.  Wow, what a concept - I wish I could meet the idiot that programmed HTML and ring his filthy pencil neck. Changing stories into book format is time consuming so  I will not be making the rest like this.  Enjoy.

Cigar Box Plunder

In the stables a cigar box containing seven-hundred dollars is stashed and Reggie and Morgan are determined to get it no matter what kind of obstacles stand in their way.  This is another Faulkneresque story and is set in Sparberry like Shem.  I considered writing even a third story so I could call it all The Sparberry Trilogy but I needed a change.  You don't have to read Shem first.  In fact, the connections I made weren't even necessary.  Give it a read through and let me know what you think.  12 pages

A Burden   FROM BALTIMORE TO MARIETTA

A road story of two brothers who get into deeper trouble every mile they go.  This is the last story I wrote for the advanced fiction workshop at college.  It's quite a departure from the Sparberry stories and went over quite well.  If you read only one story on this page, make it this one.   15 pages

Idle

It's Friday night and Vance decides to leave his room.  5 pages

Scatters

The inspiration to write this came after reading a few stories in Distortions by Ann Beattie in which she mixed up the sequence.  10 pages
