How to Eat a Berry

        Sit a while
           contemplating the berries
           in the basket before you.
        Then choose carefully.
           Here. This one--
           Large, full-formed, deeply blushed.
        Weigh it in your hand.
           Heavy for its size?
           Good.
        Run a finger
           over its flesh,
up the cleft in its skin:
           firm, ripe, ready.
        Raise the berry
           to your mouth
           and inhale its scent--
           even washing
           cannot eliminate
           the earthiness of its origins.
Lips draw in the pliant flesh,
teeth gently teasing loose the juice,
tongue catching it as it flows.
        Taste the tang
           and then return for more--
           explore its soft wet edges
           with your tongue,
           probe the engorged, reddened pulp,
           savor its succulence.
        Delicious. Delightful. Delectable.
        Enjoy more.
        Again.
        Enjoy...more...Oh, please, more!
        Again!

        Berry eaters
           make the best lovers.
