The history of art through
internet and multimedia
1. General
2. Specific
3. Skills
The beginning of the schoolyear (September '97)
The assignment is given to students and some initiationlessons concerning the use of internet are given. On one hand the students learn how to search in a focused way and on the other hand they learn some practical skills such as electronical cut and paste of the found material.
October, November, December, January
The students regularly work at the exercise. This is what we call the collective phase. Gradually the material is built up and filed in maps and bookmarklists. The students get access to internet during noon and also during certain classes. Due to the English version of Encarta 97 the students have the possibility of finding very quickly decent backgroundinformation for this project. For the use of this information we got the writen approval by the Microsoft Information Center.
Apart from that fundaments are laid for the Arteswebsite. This website is a part of the general website of the school on which also other activities are developing.
February
All information found by the students will be called in by the end of February. As information flows in it is placed in the school's website by the webmaster. The students import the texts and footnotes as Word-files, the bookmarks in folders. In this phase we encourage the students to obtain their own e-mail address in order to send their documentation directly to the webmaster by e-mail instead of using a floppy disk. This begins, to a limited extent, as of February.
In computer sciences the students gradually obtain their own e-mail address. These addresses are added to the school's website, so that students can send messages to one another.
March and April
Not everyone handed in his/her information. So more time is needed and given.
The site is introduced to and discussed by the students. Wherever needed additional information is asked for.
It appears that a few artists, especially Flemish, are barely or not at all present on the World Wide Web. Therefore our students start a search for suitable prints of the works of these artists in the school's library. A number of those are scanned and added to the website.
28th April: A group of students from the "Katholieke Hogeschool Sint-Lieven, Sint- Niklaas" visit us. These students are future teachers and we'd like to present them our website. We show them the possibilities one can have by using this medium and show them how they can make use of it in their future teaching methods. They get ample opportunity to ask questions about the project and how it works.
May
We are gradually closing our project. However here and there some changes are still being made. The exams are approaching and hence we need to close the project. It remains a piece of work in development.
13th May: Students from "Sint Jozef, Antwerp" will pay us a visit. We also present them our website and the Artesproject; this time the French class takes care of the presentation.
In the beginning of May e-mails are sent to our partnerschools from the Comeniusproject (De Monnikskap, Nijmegen, the Netherlands; Fleming Fulton School, Belfast, Northern-Ireland; Fondation Richard, Lyon, France; Rheinische Schule, Köln, Germany). We ask them to have a look at our project, to evaluate it and to formulate a series of questions about our project. During this month e-mail correspondence is held with these schools. On 24th-26th May students from these schools visit us in Kwatrecht. They also get an introduction about the "Artes on the highway" project, presented by our students in the motherlanguage of each of our visitors.
The internetproject 'Artes on the highway' we presented in June 1997, was executed as above mentioned. The results we hoped to get, were realised.
Further results
With the making of the Artesproject an urgent need for developing a website for the school arose. Further more, teachers not involved in the Artesproject saw the possibilities to present individual work, so they also gradually conquered their place on the World Wide Web. The result was not one project, "Artes on the highway" but also another project "Art Gallery". Even our students from training form 1 realised their own piece of work. On the WWW they present a whole range of posters they made themselves. Further on we published some works of art of our students on "The Children's Art Gallery" in Norway.
