The things that you will need to build this mousetrap: Large rubbermaid container, preferably 12 to 18 inches tall; newspaper; tape; the tube from wrapping paper, a string, peanut butter.

To construct the trap you must first attach the string to the ceiling or some high object so that it can dangle down over the trap. Second you need to tape the newspaper over the top of the open rubbermaid container so that the newspaper dips towards the center. In the very center slit a mouse-sized opening so that a mouse would fall through. Next you lean the roll from the wrapping paper against the rubbermaid so that the mouse can climb up the tube. Finally you make sure that the height of the end of the string is just a fraction too distant for the mouse to actually reach. On the end of the string put a blob of peanut butter so that it is positioned directly over the slit in the newspaper, but just out of reach.

The mouse, in the middle of the night, will smell the peanut butter and be drawn to the irresistable smell. He will crawl up the tube and walk out onto the newspaper. The peanut butter is out of reach, but he will still try to access it. When he goes to the center of the "lid" of the rubbermaid, so as to jump for the peanut butter, he will fall into the container and be unable to get out.

Use caution when using this method to trap mice. It is not only domestic mice which find the scent of Peanut Butter irresistable. Any mouse in your house is likely to be caught in this trap. Remember wild mice can and do carry deadly diseases and should be handled with extreme care. Do not pick up a wild mouse without wearing some sort of protective gloves. If a wild mouse bites you put it in a cage and contact your doctor. He or she will be able to tell you the proper course of action.
