Tantilla
Tantilla was found in my classroom in late September, 2001. He is about 5 inches long. When he was first found I surfed the internet to discover the variety of snake he was. I saw dozens of pictures of different subspecies of black headed snakes. Their scientific name was Tantilla. I never got around to naming him anything other than Tantilla, which was a nice enough name. Later, in a dispute on the field collecting forum at Kingsnake.com I was informed that while he has the exact coloration of a Tantilla snake, it would appear that the Sonora Semiannulata or the Sonoran Ground Snake, has that same coloration in this part of the world. I've been told that his black head will slowly dissipate and he may or may not get a neon orange stripe running down his back. He will get to be 12 to 14 inches long. He eats baby crickets right now and lives in a small cage that is perfect for him. He is very fun to watch, even though he is very tiny.
