MACARTHUR PARK

MacArthur Park was built at the turn of the century with the intention to become a holiday resort for the Los Angeles aristocracy. Today, ironically, it has become a meeting point for the nouveaux riches to purchase drugs and a shelter for the homeless and junkies. In said dreary world, a number of gangsters, with a middle-aged former jazz musician in their midst, struggle in their own way to escape the down-side of the American dream. Billy Wirth undertakes a heavy subject, which could have been a seedbed of easy solutions, but manages to overcome the pitfalls of melodrama with a semi-documentary style, the creation of well-defined characters and the arduous task of shining a ray of hope on a world that seems hopelessly doomed.
