"d'Lady Abetta and Clair"

Two Princes must find a lost jewel, but be careful what you hear.

Once in a kingdom not so very far away,
A king called his two sons and to them he did say:

"You are both clever and just, both fit to rule,
So to decide between you, one must find my lost jewel."

Oh, the sons, they smiled, certain they'd procure
The jewel, then the crown, of that they were sure.

So they went to the king's steward, who was fond of them each
And of him the lost jewel they did much beseech.

"The king told me this," the steward said with a smile,
" 'I left it with some women I met for a while.
I met them while visiting last summer's fair.'
Their names, I recall, are d'Lady Abetta and Clair."

Now the sons were convinced they'd be the kings heir.
They only had to find this d'Lady Abetta and Clair.

They rode to each kingdom, yet found no lady of that name.
Neither could find the jewel's keeper, and rode back in shame.

To the steward they went, with hopes of a clue.
"Perhaps a description," they said, "could narrow it a few."

"The king told me this," the steward said with a flair,
" 'Quite lovely were d'Lady Abetta and Clair
With bright glowing eyes a shade of blue-green,
And the softest golden hair I have yet ever seen.' "

So once more they went in search of the lost jewel
And returned empty-handed, each feeling the fool.

Then summer came upon them, winter and spring gone past,
And the sons went to the fair, hoping to find it at last.

They went through the crowds, searching hour after hour.
Finding nothing, they stopped, feeling tired and sour.

Not caring where they rested, they stopped by a stand,
And a merry woman tending asked if they needed a hand.

She talked quite motherly of her three little girls,
With glowing blue-green eyes and soft golden curls.

"In fact," she said proudly, "my three are right over there.
Their names," she added, "are Deladia, Betta, and Clair."

And the sons in shocked silence almost neglected to hear
The woman ask kindly, "Could you return this jewel? The king forgot it last year."
