Alpha Phi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. of Birmingham, Alabama was founded in 1924. The first meeting was located atop Hanover Cleaners on Ninth Street and Eighth Avenue North, across from the Parker High School annex.

John W. Love had just succeeded J. Alston Atkins as the Grand Basileus on January 5, 1924, and Sterling Brown, who was teaching at the Virginia Seminary and College in Lynchburg, became Vice- Grand Basileus. Four chapters were chartered that year: Chi Omega in Tallahassee, FL; Beta Phi in Durham, NC; Zeta Psi in Brooklyn, NY; and Alpha Phi in Birmingham, AL.

Birmingham, the largest city in the state of Alabama and very industrial in nature, was lacking in social and community involvement programs for black people. The city would see the birth and growth of the graduate chapter of a black fraternity, Alpha Phi of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., which was dedicated to brotherhood and the service of mankind.
